Actually the National Standard base unit of length is the metre in Australia in conformance with the metric SI system.
The National Measurement Act specifies the standards and how they will be defined and also implemented as primary and secondary standards (National Measurement Institute), tertiary standards (NATA registered labs etc) and how users measurements should be traceable back to a “legal” standard. Other legislation and Australian Standards etc specify the traceabilty requirements, preffered units - structural – the millimetre, civil construction - the metre), habadashery - the centimetre etc. Surveyors must for instance calibrate their electronic distance measuring equipment at least every 12 months against a measuring range that has been calibrated to the NMI standard and must be able to prove traceability of their measurements to the national standard.
Under the SI system the prefixes micro (the micron), milli, centi, deci, kilo etc are adopted by resolution and are in common usage. Mega (10^6) and giga (10^9) are also permitted but not in common usage for the unit of length.
The standard permits and defines derived units such as area - the square metre, volume the cubic metre; speed m/s, acceleration etc.
There are also other non SI units for length that are "legal" measurements which may surprise some i.e. the nautical mile, the inch and the foot, but only in permitted applications. Foot as applied to aeronautical altitude; inch - automotive tyres or rims; precision fittings or screw threads; or spare parts for equipment constructed using measurements other than metric measurements etc.

Personally I don't care if it is official or not. If it works I will use it. Is Gigabyte and Megabyte in metric, for computer use adopted by resolution LOL.
