So i need to make an adapter plate to adapt a newly aquired 12vdc motor to a hydraulic pump for the log lifter on my log splitter.

Ive got a couple of what appear to be cast iron plates from some gym equipment ive had for a long time. Cant even remember where i got them from but figured they would be perfect for the job. Ive used cast iron hand weights previously for jobs and they are ok to work with once you machine through the terrible crust and get into the bulk material so figured the same would be the case here.

However, this plate machines like a medium carbon steel. It really gives my lathes rigidity a workout. To try something different i even mounted it in my dividing head and milled the top with a tc insert endmill and it also struggled.

I have tried slow speeds (as you would with ci) and even slower speeds but this stuff is really tough. It would appear to be unnecessarily tough for a barbell weight.

The swarf comes off like a medium to high carbon steel, not liks powder as you would expec t from ci.

Anyone else had similar issues with material that you would expect to machine likd cast iron but does not?

Simon
