Looking for some advise on a repair job.

TheApprentice's apprentice (son) has broken the pulley out of the pedestal drill which appears to cause out-of-balance issues and renders the drill pretty much useless.
How did he do that? Inexperience and lack of supervision ...... I suppose it was really my fault.

Here is my plan for fixing it:
braze a piece of mild steel into the gap using manganese bronze, then machine it in the lathe to shape.

The main purpose of the repair is to restore balance to the pulley and end up with a smooth finish so it doesn't damage the belt.

Am I on the right track or barking up the wrong tree?
Any tips on brazing cast iron? (never done that before)
Other traps for [not so] young players?

Thanks for reading my post.
