Nice... What sort of HBM is it?

I'm trying to guess what the part is for, some sort of cutting or drilling head?

Part is a mandrel core that has three segment leaves fitted to it for roll steel strip.
Expands and roll strip onto, then compress and remove roll.
Core is pushed along shaft to expand and compress segment diameter.
Leaves are fitted onto tapered ramps.

Any chance of a photo or two assembled and/or in action?
How gig is that piece? I can't find anything conclusive in the photos to really scale it to...

Unfortunately it went out to customer for assembly.
it was about 1600mm long and 400 dia.

So about 3 times the size that I thought.....

Nice job, was it all done with carbide? Do steel castings get a hard skin on them like CI does?

Great job Clubman.
Looks like there were multiple setups to machine the various faces. Did you turn the ends on a lathe first or did all the work on a boreing mill, would have been nice to see a set of pictures of each step of the operation.

Have machined a few different designs over the years.
Followed this one with a slightly smaller cast iron version.
Being cast steel it didn't really have a tough skin to machine through, although most cutters were carbide because of toughness of material.
End diameters and bore were machined first, then outside machined concentric to bore.
Castings can be fun to machine sometimes.
