    Default CBN Grinding Wheels

I've been reading the book that Steran50 posted a link to, and reseaching some basic info on CBN grinding wheels.

I'm thinking of a setup that will grind HSS and carbide tooling. (including scrapers)

Diamond doesn't like steel, for reasons that have been recently discussed.

So I'm thinking of using CBN bonded wheels like these...

Resin CBN grinding wheel plain 25x150mm New | eBay
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Resin-CBN...item2a1821afa4

Might be the basis for a simple tool and cutter grinder, using CBN wheels with oil lubrication.

Is anyone using such a setup? Has anyone got any experience with CBN grinding?

    Regards
    Ray

I would just use diamond for HSS and carbide...

The price between diamond and CBN is huge and I doubt many here would wear out a diamond wheel on HSS...

Rough with a alum oxide and finish with a diamond... That is what I do with great success...

There have been several threads in both the Woodturning and Sharpening forums, in fact there is one running now.

These guys have evaluated both diamond and CBN for HSS and carbide.

That's about what I do at present as well, I use a little diamond cup wheel to touch up carbide and HSS, although lately I've been using 3M trizact belts on the linisher instead of honing HSS

What I'm thinking is that CBN can replace the Alox and SiC wheels, and would be a lot safer and easier... no dressing etc. etc... plus it will do carbide better than SiC.

Thanks Fred, there are some very interesting discussions on CBN. This guy, gets a mention on the turning forums and he is selling CBN 8"x1/12" for $185 plus shipping... Diamond Grinding Wheels | CBN Grinding Wheels | Diamond Sharpening Wheels

Interesting that he dispenses with the guards, never thought of that.

I was actually referring to the Woodturning and Sharpening forums here on Woodworlk Forums (yes there is life outside the Metalwork forum)

Thanks, yes there is indeed life outside of the darker, heavy industrial recesses of the metalwork forums.

    Hi All,

I got the CBN wheel installed and had a bit of a play around...

Very impressed!... grinds HSS like butter, in particular I was keen to see how it went on 60 Rc M2.. the most impressive thing was not how efficient it was at removing material, or how good the finish was, what I liked most was how cool it grinds. No mess no fuss just removes metal fast and cleanly.

After taking 1/8" off the end of a bit if 1/2x1/2 square HSS the steel had barely warmed up..

Being a solid steel wheel you could dispense with guards.

Run out and balance was good. The only thing I didn't like was that the coated edge is on the left hand side, I've got into the habit of grinding on the right hand edge, for things like drill bits...

So the new setup is silicon carbide green wheel on one side and cbn the other.. and a diamond cup for honing. Still haven't got around to finishing the cast iron lap. After the success of the cbn wheel, I'm thinking of lashing out and replacing the Silicon Carbide wheel with a diamond one.. I remember Phil saying how much he liked the diamond.

    But alox is gone..

Sorry if this sound like a advert for CBN, but it's not often something comes along that completely changes the way you do something...

    Regards
    Ray

Ray thanks for the feedback allways appreciated.

What if you put the wheel on the other side of the grinder or just flip the wheel around.

    Hi Jim,

I'll make up a new flange so I can reverse the wheel, just swapping sides doesn't help much

    Here's a quick video,

    Magic stuff this CBN...

Ray I think I have the same grinder as you. Except not as smooth. I didn't see any grit options on Jim's site. What sort of finish does it give? Could you go straight from the wheel to a lap? I googled CBN lapping paste but got no genuine results.

BTW, you need to speak to the birthday fairies about a tripod.

Ray, in his ad, the wheel is described to come with a spacer to position it correctly. Doesn't that work out?

Joe the spacer that comes with the wheel is a reducer from the original 32mm bore on the wheel down to the standard 5/8" for most 8" bench grinders.
