    Hi Emma,

I've been reading this thread since you first posted. Unfortunately I am unable to help so I never posted or contributed to the thread but watched with interest as it all unfolded.

While I have heard of John and read a few of his posts on this forum, I don't know you from a bar of soap. Having 7 posts to your name does not help with your credibility. Your initial post was vague at best and short on details. Then you set up a fund and asked for money. While looking from your point of view I understand your disappointment at some of the comments (especially when you had good intent) but from my point of view in a day and age where every mug seems to want to ease you out of some of your hard earned in a scam, people are naturally wary of such circumstances. Not having heard from John personally also did not help with the credibility, eventhough you have given an explanation for such.

Anyway, I certainly wish John all the best and good on you for trying to help but quite frankly I refuse to grow up!

so a big thanks to anyone who came to the party, there were a few of you who gave a tenner or a bit more and were happy to offer it without expecting anything back. it will really be helpful.

so for the rest, you can pretty much go jump. yes, buyer beware... (I wasn't aware i was selling anything)
love the spies and conspiracy twist too..
grow up guys. no hidden agendas with me.

maybe the moderator could close this post, and we will just watch out for a cheap lathe or shaper in the scrapyards in a few months.

i wouldnt know what I'm looking at though. I'm just a girl..

    discussion over.

I don't think this needs further input from anyone.
Hi Emma, You should never feel bad about trying to do the right thing, you did pretty good, considering the time frame.
I'm still hoping that we'll hear from John some detail about what's happened, and what he is going to need help with.

Surely a $2.5k (Two and a half Thousand dollars) gofundme request is selling something? It ain't cupcakes. And now that you haven't achieved it, you can tell us to "go jump". Class act lady. Go ahead and throw the toys out of the cot. What do you call a request for $2.5k if its not selling something?

    Couple of things.

You never declared your interest. Ritson. Your not a daughter? There's a whole question there why your so interested.

You didn't bother to get back to at lest 3 guys in this thread, offering help, via private message.

This hasn't come about in the past 48 hours. Surely you get 30 days notice of what ever this is. John should have sent the flag up the mast 4 weeks ago if he was in this much .

I'm not buying the "John cant log in thing" All he had to do is contact the Admin and he could have had his pass word reset. The fact that the Owner / Operator & administrator of this forum, was actually here in this thread at post # 20. Suggests to me he wouldn't over look a pass word reset.

You do know, most of this crowd carry a bit of tooth? Gofundme, that's like telling them if they want to listen to the Sound of Music Sound Track, they should I-Tune it.

A certain man who's word I hold absolute had the same experience. The Moose, when moving Vic - Qld had John dick him around for months over a $250 Starrett 199 level. John never came good.

Thanks for the sexist diatribe. Knowing what your looking at, for those of us that do, its an issue. I'm not sure what trinkets he showed you, that you think are so important to save.

The Smith,Barker & Wilson lathe. Its your header picture on the $2.5k gofundme page.

That was obsolete 30 years, before John bought it 30 years ago. I still maintain his stuff how ever he conceives its value, is scrap at best - less the cost it takes to remove.

This no sell / put it into containers / temp storage thing is just so stuffed up. The man drinks and smokes like a Latrobe Valley smoke stack. Surely there cant be a 3-5 year plan to extract it. As I said before liquidation is the only option. That would have been a far better option 90 - 60 - 30 days ago, when he started getting notification about pending actions, to barricade the place.

    I'll "go jump" now.

so ok, im not related. im a family friend. i know a lot of those lathes etc are scrap, and most of our industrial heritage would be much better off shipped to china to produce new picnic tables for aldi and Ikea. and probably that is what will happen. I know for a fact though that there are some gems amongst them, 6 or 7 round bed drummonds, a 1922 flather, and 3 or 4 shapers. I am sure everyone else has a modern CNC workshop here, but i do have a very modest "vintage" machine tool collection myself, and I would hate to see the drummonds scrapped anyway.

anyway, im not sure you get it. we have an old man who has just had his world destroyed and is about to be sunk into debt for the cost of demolition. im pretty sure he wont be making the effort to get his password reset tonight. lots else to deal with at the moment. im more interested in keeping him alive to sort out this mess than talking him though an email lesson anyway.

anyway. i wonder who the three guys were. i am sure i probably spoke to everyone who asked for a PM personally on the phone and i think they in turn spoke to john.

as for the 2500 dollar thing. the program asks for a goal.. i figured that was probably a worthy one. im very pleased there were some here who could help, and thankyou again. I do bnot in anyway expect to reach the 2500 goal, but we are starting to have some money toward some kind of storage/ covering.

hes pretty proud, and flat out refuses cash for food and accommodation. I did try a couple times.

there are certainly other circles of friends who are just as generous

so i was only trying to be nice. it was u guys that got nasty, and seem to want to continue that way. im tired, im not a mental health nurse, Im dealing with a good friend in another state who is pretty well bent on ending it all and leaving me at least part of the mess. I have work for the rest of the weekend.

I believe I stated my goals and personal interest more than once. I dont believe i need to justify myself any further.

    Emma,
I think you will find 90% of the members here are all pretty good people, I have met quite a few of them in person and get the feeling most would do what they can for a person in need.
    BUT...............
If someone was to burn one of them, the majority would stick together with the burnt party.
It brings the old saying "Once bitten, twice shy" to mind.
And unfortunately, it seems that Mr Ashburn has bitten more than one member here, which in turn has shied away many of the members that would have been willing to help.

I mean no disrespect, and I'm quite happy to stay impartial on this matter.
All I am doing is telling it how it is, without getting all huffy and puffy about it.

I hope Mr Ashburn can find a solution to this problem with your help I'm sure he can.
But I'm afraid you will have to count me out on this one Mate.

    Matt

    Hi emma,
I applaud you for what you are doing and I am sure, very sure your heart is in the right place
just a couple of things though.

Which begs the rhetorical question, when exactly is the wife (you mentioned her in post #28) going to start helping out. I don't know how much a University professor makes but I guarantee it will be more than I do

i don't know about john but if it was me, i would be doing everything i could to reset my password and explain the situation so the guys could know exactly what is going on.
Especially seeing as this may be the only chance he has. John should really make an effort so the guys can hear first hand

i would be one of those three, look at post #6

I will assume you have not intentionally tried to play the suicide card (twice) and remember that most of the guys have paying jobs as well to go to and the ones that don't are more than likely too old to be shifting heavy machinery anyway.
There used to be a time when people would rally around to help someone in need but we aren't back in the 1970's anymore.

In this day and age, every time I open my emails, someone is trying to scam me and consequently I am a bit more wary now. Not saying you are trying to do this but you have to understand that from our end there was a decided lack of information coming forward, especially from John and we just may be a bit wary about that.
As it was I had to drive to Newstead to see for myself.
Good on you for doing this and I hope there is a great outcome but sadly I still suspect there is more to this than meets the eye.

    Phil

The PM problem may be a result of Emma being a new member. As I recall you can only get or send one PM for a while (10 posts needed?). Not sure exactly how it works but I know there are restrictions.
