My challenge is for someone out there to produce a photo of a machine part that has suffered more abuse than my Arboga drill press table. The rest of the machine is in surprisingly good condition but I just do not have enough time or pig lipstick to perform a repair.

    Hi Tom,

You must have metal munching mice down under.

No John, not metal munching mice.

Just dim wits who don't give a rats a**e about somebody else's machinery.

I can only agree with you.

On Saturday my son brought an angle grinder to me to see if I could repair it. It took less than ten seconds to smell that it had burnt out the motor and that the cause was a sized up bearing. I commented that who ever was using it at the time must have been able to tell that it wasn't running properly and would have been able to smell and see it smoking, so why carry on using it. My son said exactly the same as you.

    Hello Tom,

What will your Hamatu swing? http://www.interlloy.com.au/our-prod...-grades-2p-4e/ They will bandsaw off a slice. You would have to seek outside help for the tee slots and you would need to incorporate a bolt on spigot but I reckon you could make a replacement table.

    Bob.

PS. I tried to find the photo of the original perforated 3M Waldown table I posted way back. I couldn't so I slipped up to the shed for a look. The table's gaping 40mm diameter hole and arc of damage are minor scratches compared to that Arboga abuse. I can't fathom the mentality of the perpetrators.

This abuse to drill tables & vices really annoys me. One or two, ok accidents happen. But that is pure careless ness.

    Default Abused tools!

When I was in the trades, just about everyone treated tools in a similar fashion. so when I bought my drill press some 30 years ago, that attitude was carried over from my days in the workshop. However, when it’s your money paying for the tools you do learn to value and look after them. Fortunately I didn’t cause a lot of damage to mine, more than I’d like though (the big hole at 4 o'clock was intentional BTW). And of course 30 years ago I was working so had little time to value the tools I had and even less time to look after them. Now I have all the time in the world, most of it is spent looking after them. I very rarely use the table now, the two way vice bares the brunt these days. I’m happy to say, the table is the worst example of mistreatment I have on my tools, most of the others are in pristine condition – spoiled you might say.

Something else to consider for making a replacement table is a flywheel off an engine.
I made a round table for my old Richardson about 20 years ago using a flywheel from a small diesel ( an old Perkins I think).
I had to fabricate and machine a centre spigot but it worked out quite well. The 3 small grooves you can see on the outside are the remains of balancing holes from its former life.

That's quite impressive and maybe I could still salvage the spigot from existing table
It seems like an option with the least amount of work for me to do

The swing with gab removed is 610mm, big enough but a project like that would take me forever. I never knew you could get cast iron in such large sections. Pretty impressive!!
