I and suspect many others sometimes have the very annoying chattering drill problem when at the start of centre drilling a job from the tailstock , the longer drills flex and make horrible squeeling/chattering noises , the noise goes away after the drill advances into the work piece and centres itself. Stub drills would help but I don't have any stub drills , I sometimes use a two flute end mill in the tailstock to start the hole. The chattering seems to be worse as the drills become larger in diameter. I have found that Step drilling with progressively larger drills means the two cutting edges of the larger drill initially make contact on only one point of the smaller hole and the chattering begins. Any thoughts ?
