Does anybody know about the Chinese portable hardness testers?
Hi all,
I am looking for a hardness tester for doing superficial hardness testing, Rockwell N and T scales. I've come across these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Portable...item256fdc59ae
Has anybody tried them or heard about them?
Thanks,
Rob

Hi Rob,
Usually, pieces of precision NDT equipment come with an official certificate warranting the accuracy of the piece. This is a tool required to make repetitive measurements ( of hardness) over and over again and to be accurate and yet no certificate is indicated in the blurb. While the statement about compliance with the ISO and ASTM standards is good start, I would still be looking for a certificate. Certificates with precision NDT equipment are a normal thing in the NDT world.

Rob,
Another point I had forgotten to raise, was that the tool did not have an obvious brand. Other similar tools are made and have a Company or Corporation name or brand.
To manufacture something of quality one usually has a brand name. Its something a customer can refer to and come back to and buy the same brand again because the quality has been recognized.

Hmm, they have them on Amazon too. That makes me feel slightly more secure with this type and brand.

That shop seems to be reasonably reliable - they only sell testing instruments and their range isn't enormous. Probably one of the better sources, and not a bad bet for only $35.

Glad I paused to ask and think about this. I just got this one http://www.amesportablehardnessteste...uct/model-2-s/ for a little over half of the price of the Chinese version.

When I receive it I'll continue the experiments with saw plate hardening.
