Here's a photo from my need for speed thread back in 2011. The 4140 is about 50mm diameter, the depth of cut was 15 thou, 1800 rpm with a fast feed. Even the slowest feed is fast with the high speed pulleys fitted.

Not my idea Dave. The AMF helix clamps were for a 14mm tee slot. The Schaublin's slots are 12mm. There is a bit more fooling around for me to do to get the things to work. I will post some photos but not here.

Default 4140 steel & cutting tools

    Bob
I just got back in, but while out tonight got to thinking about Tipped Tools vs HSS
I have always used HSS toolbits & carbide on cast iron castings & the like.
I think its about time I came up to speed & got hold of an inserted carbide tipped toolbit & holder.
Would the toolbit mentioned in your post on this subject be what I am looking for & if so where would I purchase.
Regarding this same subject of machining 4140, does your inserted carbide tool still produce the long stringy chips or have you overcome that problem?
    regards
    Bruce

Default Less intimate photos for Bruce.

    Hello Bruce,

Below are photos of the Kennametal insert and tool holder I use. The KC5025 grade was recommended for use on my one horsepower lathe. Here is the application spiel from Kennametal's Lathe Tooling catalogue 4010GB

" for general purpose machining of most steels, stainless steels, high temperature alloys, titanium, irons and non-ferrous materials. Speeds may vary from low to medium, and will handle interuptions and high feed rates ".

The inserts are high positive, suited to low power machines.

CTC Tools in Hong Kong sell cheaper toolholders along with a general purpose insert with similar geometry. I know nothing about them. Kennametal also offer a tool holder that allows the two shallow angle corners to be used. Handy maybe given my collection of broken tip inserts.

Power feed always results in stringy swarf if I'm turning 4140.

If your not getting chips when machining the 4140 most of the time you are doing something wrong or something in your cutting parameters is wrong or something with you tooling is wrong.

    Yes Peter,

I'd say I'm doing everything wrong but I 'm still achieving an O.K.finish. I have no idea whatsoever of the type of insert I should be using to achieve the same or better finish and produce chips. Any suggestions?

I wish not to suggest what you should be doing, but I will say what I use and find to be suitable for my needs.
    I use DCMT 11303 tips KC5010 (Ken) IC503N (Icsar)
    TCMT 110204 4025 (San) VN8 (Val) KC9025 (Ken)
    CCMT 060204 IC3028 (Iscar) IC907 (Iscar) KC9110 (Ken)
    WNMG 06304 IC520N (Iscar) IC9025 (Iscar) IC20N (Iscar).
Tool holders are all 12mm/1/2" shank,Speed is usually no more than 750 RPM anf feed rate within the Nose Radious Specs, with Depth of cut verying from 0.1mm through to 3mm.

Hare and Forbes may have them Bruce, although their pricing may be a bit high.

I have purchased a tool holder from Mcjing but at that time they didnt have an overly great range,it maybe different now.

Normally I will put a search on Ebay for the tool type I am looking for, normally I dont worry about the shank size in the search.

Some of the tooling I buy comes from the UK,USA,Germany,Israel any where that will ship overseas.

You could do a search for Glanze tooling,Shars,CTC though there range is limited.

When it comes to tips I do the same searches, just be mindfull when you look for tips that they may give either a Metric code or Imperial code for the tip, both are the same but you need to know what your looking for otherwise you may purchase a tip that dosent fit your holder.

Normally I can pick 5 to 10 tips up for $15 to $50 delivered, although parting and Threading tips can be a little more expensive.

Other members here have there preffered manufacturers catolouge to use to select the correct size Tool Holder and Tip,my preffered choice is the Iscar site I find it easy to use compared to the others..

The main tool shank profiles I look for are SDJC,STGC,SCLC and PWGN,you will find that there are more letters in the Prefix for the Tool Holder but this is normally L/R which indicates Left or Right cutting.

    Hi Bruce,

When you are looking for inserts on ebay, try searching for "wendeplatten" and select worldwide.

You can often pick up inserts on German ebay at better prices than the US, and postage rates are generally pretty fair as well.

If you opt for some of the WNMG style inserts, you can get 6 edges per insert 3 on top, flip over and you get another 3 on the other side.

And you can turn and face with the one insert and holder.
    Regards
    Ray
