Default Anyone made a chisel morticer?

Hi all, anyone tried to make a chisel morticer?

I have a spare benchtop drillpress which I could pinch some parts from. I was thinking of using the motor and machining a dovetail and rail for it to slide on. I may be able to use the rack off the DP column as well.

I dont know how the chisel attaches because I have never used one of these before.

Anyone bothered to do in to save, I reckon, 500 bucks?

    Thanks,
    Jason

Jason, you can buy the mortiser to fit a drill press for about $100 from timbercon

The drill press ones are next to useless, a drill press is not designed for that kind of stress.

M&W, it probably could be done but not worth the effort unless your set up for heavy duty metal fabrication.

The motors are flange mounted to a heavy cast hollow form that encases the chuck and holds the chisel, also has the rack and pinion/dovetail guides. It would take some pretty fancy machine work to make it from a billet or even casting it yourself.
It tis a very simple machine but wouldn't be easy to make, be easier to make a router powered slot morticer, which will produce much cleaner and accurate mortices.

Fair call Harry, but if you go to M&W's other posts you'll see he's got at least 3.5 tonne of metalworking machinery that he's probably itching to use.

I didn't bother about it, instead I bought a new one with two sets of chisels for less than half your estimated savings.

hmm, I cant find one that cheap in NZ. The ntry level ones seem to start at about 570+gst for a benchtop model.
