Thanks all for the replies, had a little play with thee chuck today, seems that the adjustment alters the focus on the cross hairs and the focal point is about 2 - 2 1/2", its a bit difficult to see as it needs a really good clean up and the cross hairs are so fine. It used to belong to the head engineer at the Toyota plant.

Its amazing what this forum can dig up isnt it?
I'm surprised just how accurate they claim it to be. And really I hope the winning bidder doesnt pay so I get another go a it
Great it didnt end up in a tip though, which I'm sure is the fate of more small "things" than I'd like to think of.
