Default Chuck - what is it?

    Chuck - what is it?-wp_20150208_009-jpgChuck - what is it?-wp_20150208_010-jpg
Hi folks, can anyone help with the correct name for this chuck? it has an optical lens with very fine cross hairs which views out the end of the chuck. Any help would be appreciated thanks in advance

Hi Stu, the reason for this thread is that I have no practical application for it other that a drill chuck, so I'd like to offload it, but can't until I know what it actually is.

I really don't think its meant to be anythig more than drill chuck.
hmmm but maybe........ does the thumb wheel focus either the crosshairs, or focus the 'target object' or move the crosshairs?

It could have been used on an old Jig Borer.

If that was the case I'm guessing (and a WAG it is to) wouldn't it have a drawbar?

    BTW is it MT3?

Not sure what my coverage will be like for the next little while so I'll give you the short version, though it might put the price up lol

If the thumb wheel.moves the crosshairs it could be used in the tailstock of a lathe for setting up work in a 4 jaw or on a face plate.

I think it's the extremely rare and highly sought after Waldown Optical Alignment Chuck, made by Melbourne Science Enterprises ( MSE ), of course I could be wrong

    Ray

PS If Genuine, the thumbwheel can be used to adjust the price...

Why would you move the crosshairs if the work is in a 4 jaw chuck, wouldn't you adjust the chuck?

You need to move both. Because you can't turn the tailstock quill to check the alignment of the scope as in a mill. Even if you could the center of the quill.isnt going to line up with the center of the spindle. So you want a fast way to setup the correct amount of offset. Unlike a centerscope.used on a mill which could be moved from one machine to the next without adjustment and still be 'close enough'(unless you were chasing 1/10ths) in which case two scews working against each other so the settig can be locked maybe more useful.
