I recently purchased a new Independent 4 jaw chuck for my lathe and a blank backing plate.

The backing plate came threaded to suit my lathe but requires machining to fit the registration recess in the chuck as they do.

I put the backing plate on my spindle to make sure the clearance in the back was suitable and it has a massive amount of run out. So when I machine the front face to fit the chuck, is that all thats required to make it concentric to my spindle or will I need to machine the side and back of the backing plate as well?

I know this is probably a silly newbie question but I am new to using a lathe and only a hobbiest. I am concerned that there is so much run out on this new backing plate that it will become quite a bit thinner if I machine the whole thing to true it up.

Thanks for any help.
