How do I claim back VAT?
For those of you who have been following my dramas re VFD's, I now have another question.
I finally bit the bullet and purchased a Drives Direct VFD from the UK. The advertised price was GBP 249.95 including 17.5% VAT.
I sent them many emails pointing out that VAT was not applicable in Australia. This all happened before the auction ended. Right at the death nell, they finally responded saying that the VAT would be deducted from the bid price.
Satisfied with that, I put in a bid, and won.
They have now sent me an invoice with 17.5% VAT included. More emails, and now their response is that it's their policy to include VAT, and suggest I claim it back.
What a pain in the bum.
So, how do I go about putting in a claim. I'm not a business, just a private person.

Hey Ken,
I wonder if you could take it up with Ebay or Paypal if you have a problem with the seller?
Good Luck
Bob.

Seeing at the moment that it is just an invoice and that you can comunicate with them by Email be it sparodically, cant you either subtract the Vat from your purchase and pay them direct through Paypal or ask them to send another invoice to your Paypal address less the VAT and pay that.
Seeing you have purchased it through Ebay cant you ask Ebay to resolve the matter on your behalf.
You maybe even able to contact the British consul or dept of trade and disscuss the matter with them.
As far as I know we dont pay any Taxes to Foriegn countries on purchases we makeAt the end of the day as long as you havent yet paid you have nothing to lose, only a delay in getting your Xmas present going.

I wouldn't pay it until they take it off. It will be a major pain to claim it back as you know.
As said above send them an message through ebay (so it is recorded) asking for the tax to be taken off and explain to them that the other people over here who directed you to their company, have had it excluded for their sales.

Tony Griffiths recommends Drives Direct on his website at Lathes.co.uk. You would think that it would be in their interest not to dick people around.
I looked at their gear when I was after a VFD for my 13. I ended up buying a Teco from Factorymation in Georgia for considerably less than Drives Direct price BUT my requirement was 240 in and out, not Ken's 415 out.

Thanks fellas,
I have sent off yet another email to Drives Direct, asking that they reconsider the inclusion of VAT.
Have also sent an email to eBay, seeking their advice.
The plot thickens, I know, I was warned, but had no choice. No other VFD is an option.
Will keep you posted.

If you have a copy of their reply where they stated they will deduct the VAT, forward it on to Ebay and start a dispute. If it were me, and they said they would and now won't, that's a deal breaker, and they can get ****ed.
There are a number of companies around the world (not just Ebay sellers) on my blacklist for saying one thing and doing another. Particularly ones who I've asked if they have something in stock, they say yes right up until you hit the 'Buy' button, at which point it magically becomes a 6 week wait.

Posted just before me....
Have you gotten someone to have a look at your motor yet, to see what they think about getting at the star point? Given what I paid for my VFD, you'd have about $150-200 to play with for motor modifications before it cost you more than the Direct drives unit. For what its worth, a rewind (windings were burnt out) on my 240v 3 hp coldsaw motor cost me $380.....

J & H,
To answer your question, no, I have not had anyone look at my Arboga motor. There were so many conflicting answers to my problem, from here and US sites, that I abandoned the idea.
Some said there was no way a star point could be found being buried deep in the windings, others said access to a star point was right there, staring me in the face.
There were other complications, that I won't go into now.
I know I could save some dollars if the solution was easy. I took the Drives Direct approach, thinking this was the easiest solution. Looks like I might be proved wrong, we'll see.

Just in case I have to pay the VAT, does anyone know how I go about getting it back?
I'm sure this was covered in an earlier post, but can't find it.

Have you tried the UK Internal Revenue office?
There might be something here:

Thanks for the link Jordan, I will sift through the documents.
Have just received a reply from eBay. They looked through my correspondence to Drives Direct, and thought it was awesome. There is not a lot they can do except to suggest I continue contact with the UK. They also suggested I could cancel the transaction, and if Drives Direct made a claim against me, eBay would support me all the way.
I am still waiting to hear back from the UK.
