    Default Abwood Grinder

I have Just become an Abwood surface grinder owner. The vertical cup type which is almost as old as me.
Anyone know much about them? I'll try to put a couple of photos up, if I can work out how.
It was built in 1947 and seems in not too bad shape. $380 with the magnetic chuck. Unfortunately a 3 phase motor, but I have a 1.5 kw single phase motor off a chipper, would this be adaptable?
    Have I been stupid?

robbo37 hits the jackpot , bloody bargain I'd say.
Is it a runner? if so you'll be pumping out surface ground miscellaneous widgets in no time.
Your single phase motor would probably be enough, check if the motor speeds are about the same. What HP motor is on it? If yours is a bit less HP then you would just do lighter cuts. Of course if the original motor is able to be connected in Delta then you could lash out on a variable speed drive(variable frequency drive) and just permanently set it at 50Hz, or a little higher if the wheel speed is on the low end of it's recommended operating range. Another limiting factor of VSD is the HP of the motor.

    Good luck with it.

Now where are some bargains I can find

    Cheers.

If I'm not right, then I'm wrong, I'll just go bend some more bananas.

Looks like you got a great bargain.
That looks like an Eclipse Magnetic Chuck or Equivalent, The Chuck alone new is about $1500
These vertical spindle surface grinders can remove metal fast & do require a bit of horsepower. Also some fiddling with the grinding wheel in selection & trueing & dressing to get them grinding well. However once things are all tuned its all go.

In regards to your grinder I have never seen a Vertical spindle grinder like yours.

The ones that I have seen have only worked in a radial movement (the head).

Yours appears to be a fixed vertical head and the table traverses left to right.

Is the any cross travel with the table, from the pictures I could only see the 1 handle.

If by chance it only moves left to right you will have to be mindfull of where you position your workpiece.

Does the work head move in and out.

How does the workpiece get closer to the grinding wheel.

Unless you intend to use this in a roughing enviroment I dont feel the HP of the motor would be much of a concern as most of your cuts will be light.

    Hi ,

Nice pickup, the local sharpening place has one very similar to that for doing planer and jointer blades.

That chuck alone is worth a few quid...

A couple of things to check, would be make sure all the lubricant systems are clean and working.

    Should be a good project.

    Regards
    Ray

    Hi ,
Sure looks like a bargin. Like PC I've never seen one like it. (looking the the handle wheel on the right hand side of the machine I guess the head moves for Y axis??)

Talking about motors, where is it? guessing again that its on the back of the head it looks like it couldn't be 1.5kW?

Looks like there's coolant plumbed through the spindle.

Does the orientation make it a blanchard?

I thought blanshard grinding was a vertical spindle over a rotating table?
