Default Very, very close up video of what is happening when cutting on a lathe

An electron microscope view of what your tooltip is doing when it makes a cut.

That is a wonderful great clip. I have never seen something like this before.

I like especially at the beginning of it, one can clearly see how the cutting edge is not infinitely sharp. Seen under a microscope it has a radius. And I can somehow imagine what would happen to the material flow, if the depth of cut was gradually diminished. About to the point when the depth of cut approaches 2 times the radius of the tip and cutting would give way to rubbing.

    Thanks, great find!
There's perfect imaging of built up edge formation, and it breaks away on the workpiece side (seen at about 14 sec and another at 33 sec) which I think explains a lot of daggy finish I get on soft and sticky metals esp. mild steel out of the scrapbox.

looks just like water being split and forced to flow elsewhere

I had seen this before - or rather, an edited version of it.
I'm convinced that built-up edge is responsible for most of my parting problems.
I wonder if there are any DIY coatings you could use at home?
    30 degrees, who uses that?
