I just went down to the shed and checked to see what was written on my collets in line with what Chris said.

He's correct in that they are rated at a 1 mm range.

I then also looked deeper and saw that I have over the years actually purchased just about all of the odd numbered collets as well - so I would have to say that it's best to buy the full set of evens and odds to begin with.

I had a chuckle over that, as I generally never read the sizes, and just run the cutter by the box and grab one that looks right to use.

Work holding? Its unlikely you'd need to grip a 6mm work piece anything like as firmly as a 6mm endmill. right?

G'day Dean. I take it that Vintage is over and you have time to breathing a bit more?

My suggestion would be to buy a D1-6 backing plate and mount a lump of steel on the front that you can turn into a collet chuck. I find that I use a collet chuck for most things in the lathe under 25mm diameter, so it's nice to be able to just take the chuck off and on. A draw bar will also restrict what you can put through the spindle.
A collet chuck is one of those things I wish I'd made sooner than I did as it is safer than having a jawed chuck whizzing around (especially if you can find those nuts Rob was taking about).

Agree. I've got one of the P-B EC type collet chucks and it's a semi-permanent fixture on my Chipmaster. It can handle round stock from 1/8" to 1 1/2" in 1/8" steps. Mine has the lever closer so doing short run repetitive work is really simple.

I would far, far rather use a collet than a 4 jaw for round stock. One of these days I'll mount the spare keyed type L-00 unit I have into a D1-6 backplate for the Monarch.

Almost! I have another week of afternoon shift but only 8 hrs so is like a normal day just more time before, to do things. I have a lot of catching up to do on the farm but expect me on the forum a bit more from now on. Anyone interested in fencing?

I was going to buy a bullbar for my new (to me) car but decided to drive slow instead. It has been a good plan. The only impact with a roo for the whole vintage was one who headbutted the side of my car and left a small dent which should be able to be popped out. I must be getting old to drive this slow. Last years vintage I hit about a dozen roos.

Today I connected a set of LED driving lights and drove down to the west boundary fence (in the dark) to see 2 fallow deer across the fence. I then connected a set of HID headlights and repeated the drive. (Don't tell anyone about the HID's) The deer were back. Soon I am going to get one to eat. Both sets of lights were already partly installed over the last week or so. A bit late as vintage means travelling at the worst time for roos but better late than never.

I will look at the different options but will have to wait until my lathe is up and running of course. Either way I had intendede to use collets on the lathe. It will depend on the cost of a D1-6 backing plate. When you get to this size prices are a bit more serious.
