Default Comparison or opinions on face mill.

Could any one who has either or both of the following let me know if one performs better than the other.,or similar.

A round insert Face mill 50 to 80mm diameter and the 45 degree Face mill of similar size.

More so interested in how often you may have to index the round insert, and also if there is any great concern with depth of cut/vibration.

Either of these will be used on an HM35.

I need to rough a few jobs shortly and was just interested in the Pros and Cons, thankyou.

I don't have either ones, only a smaller 45 degree cutter (about 32mm) Mark bought a round insert one and posted the results up with pictures here in the import thread I think it was.
It;'s only my opinion, but I think the 45 degree one would work better for roughing. I have read the round insert are great for profiling on the lathe.

    Hi Dave, Pipeclay,

I don't have either, my facemill has the rhombic(?) shaped cutters, but i'd expect the round cutters to be a bit less prone to chipping, (no sharp corners) and you'd get more rotations, in smaller steps, so you'd use more of the cutter.

    Interesting question.

    Regards
    Ray
