Default My turn to confess to buying something of limited use

Some weeks ago I was trying to buy a hardness tester - I missed that one but found an old surface roughness measuring device, which I made a low bid on.
A couple of days later I unexpectedly found I was now the owner.

It's a Mitutoyo Surftest 211. While a cool little toy, I'm not sure how much use it will be to me long term.
If anyone has a manual I'd love a copy as it has some technical stuff on the back (filters etc) that I currently don't know how to adjust.
Assuming it is accurate and the diamond is not damaged, I can tell you that polished stainless has an Ra = 0.4um, mill S/S bar is .67; a piece of turned Al was 1.3um and various pieces of steel went from Ra = 1.1 to 6.3 - about what I would have expected.

Not even close Micheal, I have stuff thats WAY less use than that

Have you tried emailing Mitutoyo? The worst that can happen is they ignore you.
I'd think they would get plenty of people looking for old manuals. That will teach them to make stuff that lasts more than 3 years.

I did some searching around last time you talked about it and it appears you may need(?) a standard to calibrate it with.

    Hi Michael,

Nice addition to the "limited use arsenal"

In any case I think I could give both you and Stuart a run for your money on "limited use" bargains.... anyone want a turbine test rig for GE CF6 engines?

Surface measurement could be a handy thing, I"ve seen sets of calibrated standards for surface finish from time to time, cheap usually..

It may indeed have some use but I think I bought it more because after seeing a Talysurf as a teenager, the idea of measuring a surface that way has some appeal.
I might make inquires of MTI Qualos and see how much a general check over would cost me as one of the things we do at work is look at surfaces for seals to run on (and currently have no way to check these are in spec). It would need to be calibrated but as you both have pointed out, calibrated standards are not unobtainable.

Model 210 flyer below may be useful. Also some demos on youtube, hth. I tend to quarantine stuff for quite a few months before moving it on. My most regretted turf outs were a large inch series bearing catalog and an informative tool steel brochure. Somehow after the event the work returns again, the internet can be thin on some historic info.

    Hi Michael,

I just recieved my copy of "Shop Reference for students and apprentices". A random flick got me to that pages on surface texture.
The filters you talk about, what are they called?
I think this book may at least explain some of that if you dont know it already.

    Thanks Stuart
The problem is that the switches for the filters on the unit are called "filter 1" and "filter 2". I've read about the function too and could guess but in order to be able to argue with suppliers at work over surface finish I really should know that I'm using the unit appropriately.
At the moment we are moving offices so I have bigger fish to fry.

Funny you should mention that...earlier tonight we were somewhere over a dark sea with one of our CF-6s being a cock. While I don't fancy myself the ideal wing walker, especially at 480 knots, I was wishing for some kind of advanced vibration analyser. (I am pretty sure that it wasn't Mabo, nor the vibe of the whole thing)

In the end it all turned out ok. Nothing to see here. Move along...
