Connection Suggestion - A Centring Scope Wiring Question
The Isoma scope I have has a metre long length of cable permanently connected to provide power to its four tiny 3.5V bulbs. The plastic bush ( for want of the correct word ) projection through the aluminium scope body won't budge. I have tried to unscrew it but without success so its removal will probably require its destruction. The bush is 12mm in diameter and projects about 5mm. I would estimate its overall length at about 10mm. The cable exiting the bush within the body of the scope passes close to the mirror mounting tube. Internal clearance is limited.
The purpose of this thread is to find out if I can obtain a cylindrical socket that would suit a low voltage power supply pin along the lines of the pins shown below. I perused a 2007 RS catalogue but couldn't find the type of socket I'm chasing. I visited the Element 14 site and quickly realised I'd waded in over my depth - http://au.element14.com/power-entry
I could possibly make a 12mm diameter housing for a socket intended as an inline connector. Additional external projection from the scope body would not be an issue. The existing cable is.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
BT

Have a look for 2.1mm or 2.5mm DC Power Jack, you will probably want a panel mount connector.

I'm wondering if a clever fella like yourself might do better starting with something like this.

Could be wrong though

OK Boys, I reckon I'll slip over to Jaycar and Alltronics for a reconnoiter. Buying one plug and socket from RS would be an impossibility for me anyway. The metal construction of the chassis socket as suggested by Dave might lend itself better to modification via a bit of turning than a plastic version. Who knows?
And Stu, I still haven't positioned the bloody mirror correctly.

Not I
I did mean for you to piff the plastic part and just use the metal insides. Simply because may well be smaller to begin with. Might not to, but worth a look.
So its not really a centring scope then is it? more of a scope lol. Its nice to know you have at least one job that you havent got around to yet Bob. Makes me feel better about my list

Jaycar and Alltronics will have the connectors also.
2.1mm

2.5mm

Check the plugpack that you are going to use as to what size plug is on it, also the link that Stuart supplied is for a 2.1mm Jack plug socket like used on headphones, your plugpack will most likely not be fitted with a Jack plug unless you fitted it yourself. There is no reason you could not use one though.

Thank you very much Dave.
The Altronics site provides informative PDFs.
The Isoma came with its own step down transformer which is pretty neat so I'll probably use it. Here's a link to another Isoma scope the same as mine on Ebay. Some previous owner has dealt more directly with the unwieldy cord by simply cutting it off and mounting the plug on the stumpy end. No real stylish in my mind. System 3R is Swedish, the scope isn't.

Hi BT,
Just back from a few days in Brisbane.. sorry I couldn't weigh in earlier, I have those jacks+plugs if you want I can drop a few in the mail... Just check the pin diameter as Dave suggests.
One of my favourite suppliers is x-on who are over your way.. but you might have to open an account? http://x-on.com.au/
Regards
Ray
PS..
Here's a link to save you the hassle of navigating their impossible search system... http://x-on.com.au/Results.aspx?level=3&plevel=6999
Detailed data from here.. http://www.switchcraft.com/productsummary.aspx?Parent=606
Just noticed that switchcraft also have a range of sealed jacks, IP68 no less! might be a good choice if it's likely to see coolant

Back to being a centring scope !
Not just a scope as Stuart correctly stated.
I needed to remove the ferrule from the body of the scope. It was too tight to remove without additional leverage and rather than resort to Vise Grips , I knocked up a nutcracker type wrench that facilitated the removal of the ferrule and left it in an unmarred state. With the cable and ring light out of the way I had access to the mirror tube that up till now has been out of whack and awkward to get to. An hour worth of fiddling and the mirror is back in its correct position.
In a way I'm tempted to remove the ring light and make a new shortened nose piece. It would require a cover glass for protection. I was thinking of a small UV filter, like something to be found on an 8mm movie camera. The problem might be that 8mm cameras are 60-ish years old and finding a filter in good nick could be a challenge.
Can anyone think of a source of, say, 12 - 16 mm round thin optical glass?
BT
ps. Thank you Stu for the numerous suggestions regarding the mirror realignment and the position of the ocular and reticle. I centred the reticle before I touched the mirror.

I needed some round glass discs for oil sight glasses. The local glass shop made some up for me (they have abrasive belts for glass). They might not do thin but if you took some slides with you they could probably give it a go for you.

(Just checked - I can spare you one but it is 24mm in diameter and 4mm thick. McMaster do one (their smallest) off the shelf that is 1/2" diameter and 1/16" thick)
