Considerations making an RF45 drawbar
I recently acquired an RF45 clone that has an R8 spindle. Anticipating the R8's arrival I purchased some tooling to suit the R8 "standard" of 7/16 20tpi. Unfortunately the mill has come equipped with R8 taper and a metric M12 drawbar thread. It left me scratching my head in disbelief as I tried to connect up some of my tooling. I ripped the drawbar out and it looks relatively straight forward. A 447mm long, 12mm diameter steel rod with a 7/16 20tpi thread at each end.
Is there any reason why I should not just thread some mild steel rod and make my own? I am not an expert on milling machines and have no idea if there are any special considerations for drawbars that I have naively overlooked?

You will get away with mild steel just fine, but just be careful you don't cross thread it as it's soft.

Apologies,
I have no idea why I thought you wanted a metric one when you already have one

HI,
There is No reason why You can't make Your own Drawbar. As Dave J was pointing out Mild Steel will work, but it is a bit soft. Personally I would use some 1045 Steel Round Rod. Another way to make one would be to Weld some Hi Tensile Bolts to either end of some round rod.All The Best steran50 Stewart
The shortest way to do many things is to do only one thing at once.
