Now should I do them first or last? What sort of groove? a nice long diagonal one or cnc my name in them? lol Any sort of rule about width and depth?

From all the ones I have seen I think it's personal choice of the manufacturer.
I would say 3 lines across the way around 25mm in from each end and 6mm in from each edge and one in the middle, then a milled groove running diagonally from one side of a line to the other side on the next would be the easiest to mill.
As for depth I think 1mm would be plenty with a 3mm ball end mill.

Have a look here, I am talking about the top photos but having the line going diagonally from the first line to the next, not strait though as he has done to pick up the oil holes.

I would definitely do any drilling and grooving dead last. Scraping around all those edges would drive you mad.

Thats exactly what I came up with late last night.
    Thanks

Thanks to everyone else that has answered and I may have missed. Time to at least try to move some metal.

Well in about 18 cycles I've got this far. I didnt use Stuax.
I wont bore you with all the pictures in the middle but I dont think I am using enough blue early on. I'll try more next time.
    Lunch then some measuring.

It's starting to look like a bought one Stuart! Apart from parallelism, flatness looks like it's well and truly on it's way. Another 3 or 4 cycles and you'd be there?

Can't wait to get a granite plate. I've been pricing them but I think it might have to be a combined birthday & fathers day present which means I may have to wait till September. Unless of course I manage to broker a deal with the minister of war & finance for an early pressie!

Anyway, keep on it it's looking heaps better already!

    Hi Simon,
Yeah its getting there, not sure I'm to fussed about the areas on the left hand side, I'm thinking that far away from the tool that its more of a way cover than anything else. A few more to fill in the top right corner though so that might get some of the left hand side.

What are you thinking of scraping first?

heh heh, not if he wants the blue to be on the end section that currently has no blue... It is a few cycles away from touching yet....

    Hi RC,
    yeap,
I've been thinking about the "not worrying about the left hand side" in my last post. As one of these days I'll likely what to use this as a ref on the carriage, that's not going to fly.
I've done a few more cycles, a few more to go lol

Well it's already miles ahead of what it used to be like. What am I planning on doing? well I have a list of items that need a touch of the scrape fairy, tailstock, compound & cross slide. I figure I'll start on the tailstock, both the base and the top, this should give me the confidence (and a little more experience) to make a start on the compound and cross slide. If I'm really happy with my performance and I really feel that I am actually making improvements then I may even scrape the saddle.

Oh, and one more thing, last time I had the headstock off the bed I noticed that there are really only 4 points of contact under the headstock, one for each bolt. Looks like they took to the bottom of the headstock with an angle grinder to hollow it out. So I may as well increase the contact area under it and properly fit it to the bed and increase the vertical alignment accuracy while I'm at it. The alignment is pretty good as it is cause I had a go last time but I achieved this with running a stone over the required spots and retested. Not really the correct method but I had no idea about hand scraping techniques or it's application when I did that.

Needless to say I'm enjoying your thread and your progress. The compound will feel like silk when your done with it. Also all that extra contact area must equate to a more rigid set up = better results!

    Cheers,

    Simon

    Hi Simon,
That's a fair list you got there, lots of alignment issues to think about. You out the east somewhere?

    Hi RC,
You can put the fire out. I'm almost there, about another ten cycles. In places the picture looks like I'm using yellow, I'm not thats just some light/camera/compression effect. Fully 15 minutes work in a surface grinder lol(though setting it up on the chuck might be tricky) Pretty much full bearing. I'll double check *a few measurements in the morning and see if I still think its time to start going for more spots*

    Hi Stuart,

Lots of alignment. One small step at a time and things should stay manageable.

    Hi Stuart,

thats a very generous offer. I'm about to make a scraper. I have the carbide insert I bought from Phil waiting.

The first job I have in mind would only require a small plate. Do you have a smaller plate handy? If so I will let you know when I'm ready to tackle the project. My other option would be to buy a smaller (say 400x400) plate to tide me over.

    Cheers,

    Simon

Just letting it be known, I’m watching this thread. I’m blown away with the work that’s getting done. Was it only yesterday that had a 2 thou woof in it? A touch more work to bring out the bearing and contact and that’s going to be a sweat thing.
Next is going to be the dovetail or more importantly the master to scrape that too.

    Phil.
