Hi Dave,
Yeah but if I get it close now and then find out I need to "tweak" the head a little I could start having problems. Damn RC and his planning

Hi Stuart,
I would have thought that you would use the bed as the reference not the spindle in relation to this. Mainly because the spindle is aligned with the bed anyway and secondly if you do need to tweak the headstock it would only be to align it to the bed which is what you have done with the cross slide anyway.
Also I would have thought it to be best practise to only use one reference and work everything off that. Less accumulation of error that way.
Cheers,
Simon

One more bit of advice for Stuart which he probably knows anyway....... Something that at the scraping class Bryan learnt the hard way....
You do not try to align two surfaces at once by scraping... You align the long surface first by scraping... Then you align the short section by scraping... Marko said a lot of the time the second shorter section will be pretty close by the time you get the long side done...Light red, the colour of choice for the discerning man.

Hi RC,
Thanks I dont recall hearing that. That means I can get stick in on the long ways. Though I am going to have to spend a little time this morning making some room as the carriage is going to have to come off and I think it would be a little rough to leave the apron(?) hanging on the feed shafts. Thought there is some more measuring to do before hand.

Your opening a can of worms, oh look theres grit in the apron, gee that feed shaft feels a bit loose in there, that gear doesn't run true on worm, or the worm needs shimming, not to mention the scraping, LOL

Srapbooking table. I know the feeling. I have some garden tools stored in a leanto on the end of my shed but it is only temporary. Just until I build a another shed to put it in. We have a largish room that used to be a games room in a previous life. It was designated as a hobby room for us both. You know, all those clean type hobbies unlike welding cutting etc. It is coming up to 12 years and I still cannot get into the room!

I have a small modeling room like that as well, it's only about 2 meter long by 1.8 and it doesn't take much so you cant get in there. I used to have a 5 meter long one until I gave it up and turned it into a walk in robe. Still I haven't done my truck models for that many years and rarely go in there other than to show the grand kids all the matchbox etc cars and trucks..

Quick post.
Not alot of cleaning went on.
The cross slide isnt parallel with the bed(need a thin sheet of paper under the left hand end of the level to get it pretty close)
Did a quick check to the spindle. (might have to get a test bar)
must run

Hi RC,
As yet no. But I can scrap the flat way(?). I dont have to worry about the spindle until I want to start on the dovetail. So besides a test bar I'll have to make a master. I may also need to make a smaller scraper. So that should keep me busy for a little while. (I think).
I'd like to get a look under the carriage...... though at the same time I'm not sure I want to as I've seen the underside of the tailstock.
Anyone had issues with the test bars sold by Chronos? Their MT5 test bar is £63.71. Any other suppliers?
