    Default CTC Boring Head

I'm thinking of buying one of these. Anyone out there use one and if so, what is your assessment of them in use. I'm after the 75mm version.

I bought the 50mm version of this from CDCO, it also uses 1/2" boring bars. I bought it with the R8 arbor.

Although I haven't used it yet, it appears well made. Price from CDCO is $US45.00.

    Bob,
Somewhere in distant memory I seem to recall a variation of the boring bar size 16mm - 18mm and 5/8 depending on where the head came from. Whatever I got did not match the boring bars I already had without buying more, so mod time then nothing fitted, so more mods.

Being only a single point cutting tool I think they will be fine.
He guarantees his products and offers a full refund if needed.

That is a good point Bob brings up about boring bar sizes. Mine is 18mm and I have found good deals on insert bars but they have been 3/4 instead of 18mm. H&F's has them but for a price of $105

I have a boring facing head on my wanted list, something similar to this one

I have a 75mm boring head like the one you are looking at. Mine came from CTC. I ordered a NT40 arbour with it and the full set of boring bars,it came in a plastic case which is handy to keep it all together. I have used it several times and it worked fine. The only small issue I had with it was that there is no zero make engraved into the head to reference to when you make the small adjustments with the vernier screw. My sharp carbide sciber soon fixed that little issue.
    Regards Bob

    Krisfarm,

You mention that on your CTC boring head, there was no zero mark. Are you saying the actual head does not look like the photo. A zero mark shows up in the product picture.

so do u use a hss cutter or are the boring bars fitted with a carbide insert. the onei bought has some adapters so i can fit small cutting tools. some of the cutting tools are very fine.

I am not sure about CTC or CDCO, but my Taiwanese kit came with carbide tipped bars and a bar to hold HSS. You can buy lathe HSS boring bars of the right size and use them. The ones I have are the same only shorter so you could cut the lathe ones in half..

Bob, let me know what you think of this one if you get it. I was thinking of buying again from CDCO but would prefer to be working in native metric instead of having to convert all the time. With this type of tool I figured if it was real rough I could always rework it.

    Pete,

I haven't lashed out and bought a metric boring head yet. I was hoping to chance upon a perfect condition Wohlhaupter for next to nothing. While it's not exactly "native" tooling (GQ's term) it's only from over the border and I could mentally cope with that.

I'm sort of still reeling from not buying a Swiss Rawyler boring head last year. It had an ISO30 abor BUT was imperial. Boxed, perfect nick... I will find something. My wife and I plan to head off to Germany and the Czech Republic later this year. Who knows, I might stumble across a Wohly or a Narex in some flea market. I' m not holding my breath though.

Why don't you drop some play money and buy the metric CTC head and then you can let us all know if it's OK.

    BT
