    Default Cubby Roofing

help... building 4 year old daughter a cubby. Total novice at this but doing a pretty good job so far.

Colourbond / laserlite (1 panel) roofing on, have the ridge capping and barge capping.

Stumped as to how to mitre the barge capping to match the rafter angle so it's a neat fit.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

We've goofed on the size of the windows and door (forgot about the fascia!), but will deal with that later on. Just want to get the roof done before any wet weather comes.

    cheers

    A couple of possible methods:

    1. I usually position one piece of barge capping so the end is centred on the peak of the joint, then use a pencil & plumb bob to scribe the line straight down.

That'd be the cut. I rarely bother cutting the other piece, I fit it first and then overlap it with the mitred section, to give a better seal.

    2. Sometimes the profile of the barge capping is such that overlapping won't work, in which case I position the first barge cap with the end on the peak and scribe a line on the wall (a thin sheet of ply or even cardboard can be temporarily tacked to the wall for this purpose) along the bottom of the capping as a reference.

The cap is removed and the second piece put in place, then also scribed. The cut will be from the peak down to where the two scribed lines intersect. So, mark this piece and then put the first piece back so that it can be marked as well.

If you're also cutting end angles - where it butts up to the guttering, for example - these are done last. The capping is left over-length until you get the centre joint right (gives you a safety margin in case you need to recut) and then simply positioned, marked, removed and cut to final length & angle.

It's really much easier done than said.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.
