Hope I didn't make a mistake buying the BS-5S, the blokes at M&G reckon it's a better saw, but when I was researching them, all I read about where the cheaper ones like the BS-4 & BS-5, anyway for better or worse I own it now. . . . . !
I think you made a good choice - congrats!

Since I got my BS 7S, I haven't touched my friction saw. I also use the bandsaw way more than I expected. Jobs I used to put off doing I now just throw in the saw and let it go for it.

Well there's for's and against's buying a 40 year old machine. But I did cut some 200x20mm plate at 45 degrees yesterday which until recently would have been painful at best but near impossible - especially with the accuracy I achieved. Yes Michael, it's a section of the leaf for the folder ..........

You got yourself a BS. You know you deserve it! Happy for you..

You had better start a thread on the build Simon. Done of us might want to copy you.....

Glad you got the bs home Jim, they are just so handy. M&g is a really good place to spend lots of money....everytime I go in there for a bearing or belt or something else mundane I seem to come out with far more than I intended too.

After mucking around with the bandsaw cutting heaps of stock......I now know what you're all on about.

    What a FANTASTIC tool!!!

It's making straight cuts, original blade and at the moment (touch wood) I can't fault it.

Ha! when I first got mine going I was reaching for every small piece of stock I could find just to see the result and watch it cut. I had to curb my enthusiasm because no matter how small the lengths I cut, I was starting to get expensive. I had to learn to let go and accept it was a great purchase!

Ueee, I intend to start a thread on the folder once I get well and truely into the build. I'll take pics along the way but it will be a long term build (rest of the year) as I'm just doing bits here and there. If I started the thread now, it would surely be painfully slow for people to follow. In any case, I have to make a thread on it because I at least owe that much to Michael G for his help!

Jim, glad to see you bought the BS-5S. I'm another happy bandsaw user but wish I'd bought one with a swivel head. While I can cut various angles with mine, I have to adjust the clamps with a spanner and align it. A real pain. At the time I thought I'd mostly cut at 90 degrees but 45s and other angles would comprise perhaps half my cuts. I also ditched the tinny little factory stand and build a higher heavier frame for the bandsaw. Plus it's on castors so I can move it around the workshop. It's much easier to use the saw when you don't have to lean down over the thing. I also made a couple of roller stands (like these: W343 | RS-1125 Roller Stand | machineryhouse.com.au). They're great for feeding long lengths into and out of the bandsaw, plus if they're high enough, you can use them for long pieces throught the pedestal drill. - Peter

I've developed a problem. I'm looking for metal to cut up on my bandsaw.

I have it on a timber workbench, not the supplied stand so its nice and high and I can just stare at it cutting.

Seriously it's one of the most awesome machines I've ever bought.

See'ya I need to start her up

You need to try something they used to do at trade shows.
Get some 50mm bar set the saw up to stop with a couple of mm left to cut.
    Cut after cut 1-2mm wide.
Bend the result into an interesting shape.
    Now thats art
Should keep you out of trouble for awhile lol

What. . . . no saw mods yet?

This will give you something useful to do and maybe you can even do some useful cutting into the bargain.

I just rebuilt the thing! Only mod since was to reface the clamping surfaces to true them up after 40 years of cutting. Simon

I prefer horizontal band saw - a lot quieter, accurate, can be changed to vertical. Trajan 7x12 band saw. Band saws are versatile.
