Hahah blade steel opinions always get heated!
To be fair, I do like 440c. My folder I use everyday around the farm is a buck with a 440c blade.
Years ago I was frustrated with the quality and feel of commercial knives. Most of that comes down to the trend of using a low rusting steel. Which is a real advantage as even I use them.
I started making knives as a hobby about 14 yrs ago and turned it into a little side business for fun.
The comment about heat treatment testing was just to see if it is worth using that steel or not. I scavenge as much steel as I buy and I still do this little test on steel to get a feel for it.
The actual heat treating of knife you are making is a little more complicated than that, however it is completely achievable in a small shop. The more exotic steels can be a different story.
There are so many opinions on steel types. Hands down my favorite is 1095! It sharpens to a razors edge super quick and it holds that edge longer than any other steel I have worked with.
I think reusing the steel has merit. The test only takes a few moments and it can speak volumes abouert what the final product will be like!

Synthetic oil is fine! I have used both.

Bob L, I have never tried out O1. I should give that steel a go some day. What is it that you like about it so much?

What about using a nibbler? Even some of the drill attachment ones are rated to cut stainless.
