This has been a long term project. This CVA die sinking mill is a stout machine, heavy and well made.

Main problem is: the spindle has suffered , the 1/4" keyway for the 5 step pulley has worn badly , there is another keyway on the opposite side of the spindle that is in good shape. The nose has a #3 Morse taper that shows wear, some scoring. CVA changed the design of the spindle at least 3 times over the course of the production run. This one I have is a 'middle' or type 2 model. The later built examples have a NT30 spindle and a different bearing setup. The first type has a long bronze bearing which must have caused problems.

Option 1 is to make a new spindle, the original spindle is made from a medium grade of steel, not hard. It has a bore all the way through for the tool bar.

Option 2 is to buy a new NT30 Bridgeport type spindle ( easy to buy ) and fettle it to make it fit the CVA quill.

Any thoughts ?
