Cylinders - Are They Correct?
Hi,
I contacted both Air Liquide & BOC gases last week about buying gas cylinders off other people and they both said it was illegal - you can only hire gas cylinders I was told by both - is that true or false?
If it is not then are there any other companies one can buy them from?
Cheers

As far as i know it is the truth. I am in the food industry and have only ever used BOC gases. The hire of the cylinder is free because you are using their product. Cylinder maintenance is their responsibility, makes life easier for us all.

Not to mention the cost of getting them checked each time you have to get them refilled. They won't swap them for another bottle, they would have take to yours away to check it, then fill it. So there would be a downtime while waiting to get it back, not something that can be done in ten minutes or so.
This is what the cost of hiring covers, testing and replacing bottles and valves.Cheers

Actually BOC charge at least $70 'rent' per year - thats what it was several years ago when I rented from them, almost certainly more now. Legally you can own your own bottle/s in NSW I have been advised, but it is a good earner for BOC to force you to rent from them - if the bottle lasts 10 years then they have $700 (at least) from you - and I suspect that other compainies are following that lead - think 'Linde' used to sell bottles or re-fill them, but I have an idea they were bought out by one of the bigger players.
Try getting a LP bottle filled these days - everyone is getting rid of their bulk tanks and insisting you use some sort of swap system - they don't have to have trained staff on hand to supervise the filling and probably make more money from charging the inflated price for a 'swap'. How long before some enterprising buiinessman comes up with a 'recommendation' to his local pollies that it should be 'illegal' to own LP gas tanks, you'll have to rent them.

Its about $100-120 p.a. for cylinder hire now.
As mentioned, they don't actually fill your cylinder on the spot, instead its a swap system.
So there would be a whole lot of logistics involved in owning your own cylinder, plus the cost & hassle of testing, transport etc. Personally I'm happy to pay the hire to avoid all this.

In Newcastle it's $108.36 per cylinder per year for "D" size , thats the small ones, and $60 for an acetylene , don't know the present price of oxy? , but when you need it in a hurry its worth every cent

From an OH and S point of view having them own them and take responsiblity for them is a good thing. Empty one comes in, serial number, condition and age are checked and refilled if ok.
You rarely see a poor bottle from the supplier.

Linde is the other brand that do cylinder rental. It's $50-$60 for 6 month rental and about $80 for a gas refill (I think..) for an 'E' size.
