D1-4 pin dimensions
Hi all,
I want to have a go at making some pins for the C10. Yeah I know you can get them from Mac-it but where's the fun in that?
The ones I have in the only chuck I got look very home made and worn. So is there someone with a good pin that could measure it for me?
As far as I can gather from my pin and googling the pin is 5/8" dia. The scollop is 3/4" dia, centered on 5/8" from the end of the pin. My pin has .350" left.
Cheers,

I'm just having a good look at the drawings now. My dodgy pins are made very poorly indeed, the "ramp" on the scollop is on the thread side, opposite to the drawing.....
I'm thinking of using mild and case hardening. Otherwise maybe silver steel.

Hi Matt,
It would be good to get a length of 4140 to use, but its a real pain for me to get, I can only get black, bright and silver steels here. I should ring interloy in albury and see if they will send some up. I know they have a rep that comes up here so i may be able to get in touch with him.

I have a length of 4140 on its way from Bohler in Wollongong. The steel may be cheaper then Interloy in Minto, but because of where they are freight is twice as much. i have actually looked and freight from Melbourne would be cheaper too. Oh well. I need some for a real job so i'm not going to complain.
So, does anyone want any pins? They will most likely be made with imperial threads (3/8 x 24) as my machines have imperial leadscrews. I guess i could make a few metrics though, or leave them un-threaded. And before anyone asks no D1-3 pins are not interchangeable with D1-4 pins.....

I might well be wrong here Ewan, but I think your choice of 4140 might serve you better than Silver steel, as SS gets very brittle once hardened, and the stresses on the pins may just be enough to cause some excitement if the chuck started chasing you around the workshop.

I have not used SS yet, but I do have a few 900mm lengths I bought from the US some time ago, ready for when I need them.
How deep does the hardening go with silver steel? I am interested in peoples experience with hardening SS for my own knowledge. Last week I received my new Rothenberger LPG gas torch. I have been meaning to do a thread on it. Maybe today? I have been busy with other stuff.
SS is a convinient material for these pins, but I also wonder if it is suitable. This is not the type of use it is intended for, but that does not mean it is not suitable. It depends on the strength of the material and the depth of hardening.
My experience (30+ yrs ago) is with induction hardening of shafts up to 400mm diameter and 3m long. These were heated / quenched in a continuous flow as the heating coil rose up the shaft. I have also done "in place" quench where the work was heated, then quench was activated, by the end of the heating cycle. I also remember some gears which were heated the dropped into oil. The dropping was done with a hydraulically powered machine that rotated the work. The drop was done with fast traverse with the work still held and rotated.

Well the pin making is well underway, Just need to thread and cut the retaining screw groove.
I used an insert Peter (thorens) sent me today, it cut the 4140 really nicely, good finish etc. It is a CCGT......SM. http://www.iscar.com/eCatalog/Family...pp=20&GFSTYP=M
