Hi all
A couple of months ago we had a trade demonstration at my local model engineers group (MSMEE), by the Melbourne distributors of Evapo-rust.
It's a non toxic biodegradable rust remover, I bought a 5 litre container and it works really well .
Causes no damage to any plastics, rubber, or paint. Apparently it just removes the carbon from the rust and causes it to break down so that it can be brushed off.
It won't remove carbon from the parent metal and doesn't damage it in any way, and you don't have to oil the derusted part straight away like when using acids.
You can use it multiple times and it lasts longer if you remove any oil or grease from the object first. The US and Aussie military are big users, for rust removal on their tanks and ships.
Here's a link to their Aussie website. I have no connection to the company.

Hi Gary, welcome to the forum,
I am sure I have heard the name somewhere before, maybe on a US forum.
Thanks for the link and the feed back on what it works like. It doesn't look to be too badly priced either, if it does a good job as you say.
It must be pretty good if the US and Aussie military are using it, and like you say the tools won't need oil strait away like acid does.
Sandy,
This stuff sounds good and would suit you application.

I had a look at their website after posting the link and it says the evapo-rust pulls iron out of the iron oxide. Sorry about that Stuart, the rep definately said carbon. My bad.

Hi sandy sorry to hear your problems I spent a good 4 days helping out guys with their sheds after the flood organising the SES etc.
I have seen the evapo rust stuff seems to work well probably worth a shot I would look at electrolysis as well then when you have everything cleaned up give me a yell and I will drop some Lanotec product around probably Heavy Duty to help you out.
Just PM me when your ready.
WillyI like to move it move it, I like to move it.

there is an old fella here that has been an engineer all his life and he swears by soaking for quite a while in a solution of dilute molasses he freed up a lot of rusted up irrigation pump diesel motors off the river bank with this method .
and cheap too you can buy a 20 lt drum of mallases and dilute it down and make a 200 lt drum of solution i should think.
