The SM 0920A is the same as H&Fs AL50G. I had two of these, one taiwanese and one chinese and both had the same problem. I learned to live with it by adjusting the tailstock clamping mehanism as required. Aside from this problem they are an excellent lathe and very popular all over the world with a number of companies selling them, albeit with their own names on them. Parts are easy to get and tooling and info for them is also readily available. There is a tailstock cam lock modification you can make which should fix the problem if your new lathe arrives with the same problem, good luck.

The Steelmaster SM920A and SM920V lathes are indeed similar, but not the same as the AL50G lathes as they already have a camlock tailstock as standard, in the case of the SM920V they also have electronic variable speed. So no camlock modification is needed on these Steelmaster lathes.

On Asset's website it shows what looks like an cam type clamping lever on the tailstock, for the SM-0920A in question.

Well I will be buggered. It looks like big shed is better than a current affair.
Yes I did receive a phone call from the Sales Manager at Asset. But.
Our original chat was I get a new lathe that would be checked before sending. It now seems that I have to send mine back first and await their decision as to if I am right or wrong. Here we go again with different tales told to different people to what ever advantage can be gained.
It just appears funny to me that I get a phone call from the Sales Manager on the morning I was prepared to go to Consumer Affairs. Up till then nothing. My letter to them was by registered mail yet was not replied to till the death.
Do I have much confidence. NO.
    We will wait and see.

You really should go to your Consumer Affairs Dept. in your state and seek their advice, even if you have to persue a claim and if it is found in your favor, you are entitled to claim for any expenses or costs incurred with the claim. If you win the case, these include but are not limited to-

Cost of returning the goods for warranty or appraisal.
Cost of filing the claim ($36 when I had my claim which I received back from the trader)
Cost loss of income or time for attending a tribunal claim.
The original cost or refund of the goods
Cost of the original freight charged to you
    Etc, Etc

Well here we go again. A phone call from the Sales Manager has turned out to be as hollow as the others.
Things change like the weather. First it was we will send you a new lathe and you return yours. Now it is you return yours, we will check it out and make a decision. Sales manager will call you back with details as to return of lathe.
    STILL WAITING.
    Do I have confidence?? NO
It just feels like they want to wear me down and go away little man. You are a single item customer and we are not interested in you.
Big Shed you may be happy with them I am not by far.
If I knew how I could post a video here showing what is wrong with the lathe. I tried sending this to Asset but my email system said it was to big.

You could post the video up on YouTube and then provide a link to that.

Copy and paste the web address, but you will need to remove the s in the https:// part to get the player to embed and not just be a link

I haven't personally dealt with asset, but based on their performance or rather the lack thereof when my employer purchased a Sahinler punch and shear, (turkish), this is about the level of competence, honesty and ethics that you can expect.
The Machine was a POS, their delivery was snail paced and you guessed it, once the money was in their bank they lost all desire to communicate and nobody knew anything - you must have talked to someone else because if I had known I would have fixed it and so on and so forth.
I don't see myself dealing with them in the forseeable future!!!

After following this thread, ditto. I won't consider them as a supplier for anything they sell in the future. Business must be booming for them to treat people like this.
