But what condition is it in????
It is a bit of an orphan??? Never seen a 15" DSG before, see plenty of 14 and 17 and 21's though...

15's aren't uncommon, at least in the dsg context. In my experience no dsg is particularly common in australia. 600 machinery had the market cornered with colchesters.
Seriously having that in your garage....it'd border on a sexual excitment every time you entered...I'm just a startled bunny in the headlights of life. L.J. Young.

I dunno Damian, if it is worn it is pretty much only worth scrap iron unless rebuilt....I simply cannot get excited over worn machines, I have had enough of trying to coax accurate work out of them...

It'd have to be really well used to be unsalvagable. Perhaps I've been lucky but in my experience there have been so many shops go out of business over the last few decades that worn stuff goes straight to scrap and the stuff that gets onsold is servicable, being disposed of due to business closure rather than end of life.
Small machines are different of course because hobbyists wil buy anything, but while dsg's are rare in aus the truth is there are many many surpluse bigger machines around. The second rate stuff mostly is unsaleable.
Having said that of course you'd go have a look. I plan to move next year and I've got other more important issues to deal with than buying toys, so I'm not going to bid. It's just a heads up to anyone in the market for a quality machine.I'm just a startled bunny in the headlights of life. L.J. Young.

HI,
Yes, I seen that Lathe too. It doesn't look like it has done a lot of Work though. If it wasn't so heavy (2.5 ton) I would bid on It Myself. My Shed Concrete Floor is only 100mm (4 inches) thick. I am skeptical though they say it has a 3 HP Motor at 425 volt, yet the Spindle bore is 68mm. Doesn't sound like enough power to drive the Old Girl. If that second last Picture is of the Motor sticking out, then the Motor looks to be much much much bigger than 3 HP.

HI RC,
That a Bloody Nice Lathe, what Make is it?. I Myself am still looking and saving for a Bigger Lathe than My 9" Hercus. I have seen a couple of Nice Macsons on eBay, but just to much power. Apparently from what I found they are generally 7.5 HP. Well Happy Turning.

The DSG should be 7.5 hp I think. You don't need more than 100mm to sit it, but you shouldn't set it up straddling a join.
Going from a DSG to anything else is like swapping top quality ala cart for american junk food chain, simply no comparison. Everything is just nice.\
Anyway, as long as your having fun.I'm just a startled bunny in the headlights of life. L.J. Young.

I have been squinting at that listing for days now, trying not to get interested. That is one hell of a lot of lathe for the money.
But.
I have been rebuilding a lathe half that size for two years now, and it isn't even a gear head. If I was going to tackle a DSG rebuild I'd want to have an engine crane for mundane things like removing the tailstock and chucks.
Re-doing the ways on that require grinding (I believe they are hardened?) If in at all reasonable shape it would be a dandy thing to own with one reservation:
720 max RPM is pretty low for most of the things I'd do, but with HSS tooling on a 10" workpiece it would be dandy.

too big, 72" centers, it'd be 20 feet long. The 36 is nice and short, despite the long headstock.
For the stuff I do 200 - 600 is fine, but whatever, easy enough to gear up a bit...I'm just a startled bunny in the headlights of life. L.J. Young.

Bit big for the average hobby bloke but if you had the room and the cash it might be worth it for the odd paying job that needs a decent machine. Then again if you had the room and the spare cash it would be nice to have just so you have a machine that could rip off a 10mm DOC with out raising a sweat.
I was at a workshop that a mate works at recently. Only a small place that does jobbing work. Was talking to the boss and admiring the horizontal borer. The table is about 1200mm square. Asked him if he gets much work for it. Answer was no but he's the only one around with a machine that big so when he does get work he can set his own price. Said that pays for the machine to take up space for the rest of the time.
