    Default Deckel SK40 Tooling.

While patiently awaiting delivery of my mill I have been thinking about tooling for it....

I think I have my head around half of the specifics for SK40 tooling.

This is a standard taper of which there are a number of variations in implementation. e.g. CAT-V40, BT40, NMTB40, NT40, BT40 etc.

All of those tapers will slip quite happily into, and be snug in the Deckel spindle.

The first issue then is the drawbar thread. The Deckel standard drawbar has a female S20mm x 2 buttress thread for retaining the toolholder in the spindle. NMTB40 tooling has a cylindrical extension with an internal thread that goes where the Deckel drawbar wants to see a male S20 thread. Thus NMTB40 is not compatible with Deckel's drawbar.

CAT-V40 tooling has a female 5/8" 11 TPI thread to retain it. A thread adapter with two male threads can adapt this to Deckels S20 drawbar.

BT40 tooling is similar to CAT-V40 tooling but uses a standard 16mm female thread. There is a 16mm to S20 adapter for this tooling as well

So holding CAT-V40 or BT40 and obviously SK40 tooling, in the spindle is possible.

The bit I don't yet get is, the drive ring setup.

Is there anything special required to drive these different toolholders or can they all be driven with a "one size fits all" drive ring?

I ask because I have read that CAT tooling is meant to only fit in one orientation of the spindle i.e. can't be turned in the spindle 180 degrees.

    Cheers

    The Beryl Bloke

P.S. Being "patient" really means I want the mill here right b***y now!

    Hi BerylBloke,

The drive ring required is this one. Deckel Mitnehmerring für SK40 Spindel-RCMNRD

For our FP2LB, we've opted to stick with the S20x2 buttress thread draw bar, and I got ER40 and ER32 collet chucks from Singer, I suspect they are chinese made, but quality looks pretty good. Time will tell.

Also picked up a Wohlhaupter UPA3 boring and facing head with SK40 S20x2 which turned up last week, so I'll get some pictures.

    Regards

    Default Tooling

    Hi RayG,

    Thanks for the reply.

I am not sure whether a drive ring comes with my my machine or not. Now I know where to get one, A good thing indeed. Probably a spare or two would be a good idea!

Like you, I think I will stick with the S20 x 2 drawbar.

My initial tooling list is probably an ER32 collet chuck and a collet set to suit, a SK40 to MT1 adapter (I have a reasonable collection of cobalt MT1 taper shank drills), a 16mm drill chuck and a fly cutter (probably the tormach one which I'll hold in the collet chuck) . I also will need to be able to tram the head/table so I'm going to look at an oversize nano tram or mini tram -see here if you are unfamilar with these Accudyne Corporation | Ez-Puller The Only Bar Puller That Is Self Adjusting.

I don't have a drill press yet so the mill will do double duty there for awhile.

While I am happy to buy from Singer's store, I'm also looking to broaden the range of tooling I can use as much as possible, thus my question.

    Cheers

Maybe a few deckeldapters might broaden the potential tooling sources?

According to Mr Mueller, a large amount of the stuff Franz is now selling is coming from the far east - there is a fair old mark up judging by the linked prices. Typical BT40/DIN69871 is low US$20s even dealing with a middle man. A mate recently got quotes for airfreight of $9/kg via dhl for something unrelated.
