    Default Delta or Y?

I bought a very cheap 1HP 3 phase motor and want to hook it up to a VSD and I need to know if it "star or Y", as compared to delta wired.

    Here's the terminal block.

    The number pairs 1-6, 2-4 & 3-5 suggest a

I have opened up the motor to see if I can find a common points inside but it is a jungle in there.

The resistance between all three contacts is 19.2 ohms and between the contacts an case is >4 megaohms.

Any advice on this is appreciated.
    Thanks

going by the wiring where it goes down into the stator it does'nt look good
before it gets connected up to power put a megger on it

it would mostly likely be star.....
it should have six leads if it could be wired in delta

    Thanks eskimo.

Most of that gunk is fine sawdust (unit was used on a small docking saw) .
Mega is definitely going on it before it gets fired up.

    Cheers

What makes you think I'm a carpenter?

My day job involves machine that look like this.

    Hi Bob,
Where the leads join into the windings are there 2 winding wires connected to each? If so you have a delta connection.

    same thing
    hahahaha

I knew that would get a terse response from an Accountant

ruddy hell what is it...some sort of steam generator/autoclave/distellery (hahaha) ?

Close, It's a high melting point metal evaporator - it's part of a analytical instrument for preparing reference standards for use by the nuclear industry and researchers. This one is a big one (10 kV - 10 A, 2800º) located in Europe, our machines look similar but are much lower power 20Kv - 10 microA, 2000º).

Of course I don't make these machines but if it breaks the nearest engineer is in Sydney so I have to be able to take it apart and fix it if I can. So there's a fair bit of computer interfacing, and bit of electrical and electronics needed. Mechanically they uses exotic stuff like pure gold O-rings to get ultra high vacuum (100 billionth of an atmosphere).

Thanks AD, I have the two ends off the motor but I haven't been able to see that far inside it.

Wow, gold O-rings. That is exotic.

    Hi Bob,

If forced to guess I'd say if the nameplate says 415v then it's most likely star, so you need to dig out the star point and bring out the 3 extra wires. I'd suggest you take it to a motor re-winder, it's a 5 minute job for them and they can megger the windings and re-spray a bit of varnish while they are at it.

Also, on older motors the insulation on the wires leading out to the terminal block can get cracked, so it's a good time to inspect those as well.

    Regards
    Ray

0.0000076 microns. Turbo molecular and Ti Ion pump combo backed by by a mechanical scroll pump About $100k worth of vacuum gear. The turbo molecular is 7 counter rotating vanes spinning at 50,000 rpm. The Ti Ion pump is a getter type pump.

Thanks Ray. I have shown 2 electricians and an electrical engineer an dthey agree - Star is what I want so I will leave it that way.

I will tidy it up and megger it - if it passes then I'll run it on a regular 3P supply and see how it goes - If it goes OK then I'll try it on a VSD

Pretty sure that would be delta connected.
It is a bit hard to say as the connections are internal.
