Designing a drill sharpener
I apologize if this topic has come up a million times, firstly, has anyone come up with a simple drill sharpener? It's something I'd like to have a go at.
Question, when sharpening a drill bit, is the bit rotated and pushed in whilst rotating at the same angle to get relief, or is the bit rotated and the tail end dropped during rotation.
Would either of these actions get the same result?
I just can't get my head around it at the moment.
Gentlemen, your comments please.

Personally when off hand sharpening I rotate the bit while pushing the shank end away from me.
In a recent thread that touched on drill sharpening I posted this which may be of interest -

It seems a good one to me. (I have a Drill Doctor, so have not pursued it).

For the smaller bits I bought a Drill Doctor, tried bench grinder type attachments, still no good, Drill Doctor absolutely fantastic, like new bits.
To be honest I wouldn't waste my time trying to come up with something better, unless big bucks was spent on a tool and cutter grinder.
I'm about to start making a Bonelle T&C grinder, for my milling cutters and router bits.

Hello Ken,
Maybe this will help provide some inspiration. It's something that I downloaded from somewhere, so I've no other information beyond this picture.

Thanks Baron, but I don't think it is worth following up at this stage. I don't believe that there is anything to gain in regards to my study of the drill sharpening jig improvements, and I don't have the time to add more to my plate at this time. I would like to make model engines one day.

Ken,
When I am sharpening by hand all of the following happen together
The drill bit is pushed in - very minimally-the cutting edge is cut first and rotates upward.
The drill bit is rotated - I have never measured it but would say less than 1/4" of a turn
The shank (tail) is dropped at the about the same rate as the rotation.
The difference to a jig is that the cutting occurs on the front face of the wheel.
My wheels are Alum oxide - 40# for roughing and 80# for finish.
Hope it helps
