    Default DeWalt Bandsaw model 3501

    Guys,

my bandsaw failed today. First time. Tension screw at the top of the machine appears to have either seized or stripped. Can't undo it. Does anyone have any idea how to disassemble the top wheel and tension assembly?

I believe it is the same as the ELU 3501 also, in the U.K.

All help gratefully received. Ta. Ian

    Ian,

Attached exploded diagram and parts list may provide some ideas.
    Do you have any photos?

    Hi Ian,

Stripped or seized, the wording is fairly important for us to be able to help you more.
Stripped it is, if the tension device can't tighten up or undo, but goes around and around with out anything happening.

Seized on the other hand is jammed up solid and won't budge in any direction, loose or tight.Seized will be possibly difficult to pull apart.
if it is stripped its probably easier to disassemble. If the assembly is the same as in many other bandsaws, the blade tension block is an die cast alloy jobbie that lends itself to failure .
The saw is described in manufacturers docs releases as an aluminum framed bandsaw. It follows that it is likely to have a tension box assembly of aluminium or die cast as well.

I suspect the thread (if diecast ) has seized upon the thread. If you can't get replacement parts ,my suggested repair would be to free up the thread . may be soak the assembly in diesel. If the alloy nut ( if it is alloy) is frozen to the thread to some methyl salicitate - oil of wintergreen on it.that has freed corroded stuff for me in the past. I would replace the the nut with a stainless one perhaps.

Steel and ally don't play well together

Again a photo will help immensely.
In the meantime this Utube video might help. Its not exactly the same saw but same principles apply
