DM 45 power feed
I have been making this power feed .. I found the concept on Steve's web site in WA
A simple idea but he says it works .... The motor is a XD -XF Falcon PRESLITE brand .. common as chips . Almost ready to test it

Its pretty much self explaining how it goes together .... I made a puller ( seen with bolt ) to remove the drive collar as it is a tad tight on the shaft .
I made some tiny steel bushes to fit into the plastic gear . With the electronic controller, the motor speed is variable down to a very slow RPM
BTW thanks Stuart for the 5 BA screws ....

Looks good Mike. I made one for my HM45 mill a couple of years ago. I used a 24V gearmotor I got off Ebay and made a dog clutch so it could be dis-engaged.
I'd be interested to see how yours goes, speed wise.
Are you having a push button for 'high speed' traversing?

As I was removing the motor from the car , I manually pushed the wiper arm mechanism to check out the force required . It takes quite some force to move those arms across the windscreen The plastic gear and drive worm assemby won't be under anything like that load in the mill-drill.
Yes I will install a quick rewind switch ... a resistor wired in . The controller is rated at 5 amps ... MIKE

HI,
I will be interested in knowing how it Works out. I have the exact same DM45 Mill Drill. I have thought about about making one Myself in the Past after seeing Steve's Website. I have never got around to it though. I hope it goes well for You.All The Best steran50 Stewart

testing
I have just performed some preliminary tests .
After some minor adjustments, it is working great . The meshing adjustment of the gear and worm is a bit touchy . The motor is sounding rather growly , it sounds like ..... well, a wiper motor !!
I will apply some vaseline to the gear .

Hi Mike,
Glad you found a use for them.
Does the motor sound the same running on straight 12VDC? maybe its the speed controller making it growl.
Have you cut some steel yet?

yep

Yes I milled a small test piece of mild steel ..Its very nice . The speed slows right down to a crawl with the PWM controller . You need to slacken the gib levers off as its only a small motor and it doesn't like too much resistance . It doesnt look like it will stall at all , but having the table free to move does help .
It has quitened down a lot since the table moves with less resistance . I can hardly notice any noise now.
It is somewhat fiddly removing and inserting the drive collar with its two prongs but apart from that , it performs well .

remote
I turned some lugs and milled some brackets up, I can remove the box and have a remote control. This pic shows the box sitting out of the brackets ..just resting there .

They look a little small to me. Any idea of the current draw or wattage of the motors? Speed looks a bit slow as well.
Let us know what you discover.
From what I've seen, the commercial units have a speed range of 0-200 rpm with a high speed traverse of around 240 rpm, just to give you an idea.
