Default Drill chuck to arbor, table of sizes etc?

I am totally confused, yeh I know, me of all people.

I wish to purchase a genuine Jacobs drill chuck, say from 0-13mm, and mate this with a No.2 morse taper arbor, for the tail stock of Hercus lathe.

Q1. Can some kind member point me to a table that lists the various threads and their designations, likely to be found in the end of the chuck.

Q2. Can genuine Jacobs chucks still be found, or have the Chinese taken over these as well?

Q3. If not Jacobs, what's another good brand name to look for?

Q4. How much do good quality drill chucks cost these days. I've never had to buy one before, for a lathe.

    Many thanks,

    Ken

this cheap chinese webpage has some MT size info.

Wikipedia has a lot of info as well.

BTW the cheap chinese stuff is not bad for the price. A Genuine 5/8" (16 mm) capacity Jacobs Chuck from Enco will set you back ~ US$100

You can buy 3 of the chinese ones for that. I have several of the cheap chinese ones and have broken the jaws on one and the replaced it without question. What I do is buy much bigger than I need and figure it will take the knocks - of course if you want real precision the chinese chucks are a lottery.

About 2 yrs ago I removed a perfectly good 1/2" jacobs chuck from my lathe tailstock and replaced it with a chinese 15mm keyless chuck, cost about $AU70 inc arbour from Forbes machinery here in Adelaide. The chinese chuck has never even looked like slipping, imho it was a good move. The chuck operates smoothly, runs on center and alway grips tight. I occasionally use the jacobs chuck by hand with a counter sink bit as a deburring tool. I have yet to see a lathe or drill press chuck that is fixed to the arbour with a thread, all the ones I have seen have an arbour with a morse taper on one end and a short taper on the chuck end, the chuck has a corresponding internal taper. It is possible to get them apart but normally this is not done. The taper probably has an official name but I don't what it is. I was using a 1/2" Czech made chuck (which was very good) on my drill press but have recently replaced with a 13mm chinese keyless chuck from fleabay.
Not all the chinese machine tool stuff is crap, its a shame to see good brands dissapear or resort to sourcing their stock from asia, who knows maybe jacobs are getting their chucks made in china.

    Thanks guys,

That has straightened me out. Seems I need an arbor, tapered at both ends, no thread.

Looked at McJings keyless chuck and arbor, probably the way to go, especially at that price.

    I have 5 chinese chucks
1 keyless 0.2 - 16 mm and an old 1-16 mm B18/MT3s for my DP (both McJing)
    1 keyless 0.2 - 13 mm B16/MT2 for my wood lathe (carbatec)
1 keyed 3 -16 mm JT3/MT3 that came with my DP
    1 keyed 1 -13 mm JT6/MT2 that I came with my lathe
The keyless 0.2 - 16 mm is the one where one of the jaws broke and it was replaced, other than that they have been fine.
The most precise of the lot is the 0.2-16 mm B18/MT3.

I turned my own B16/MT2 arbor and given the price of the McJing arbors - never again!

Rohm chucks are very good IMO.

Ken, someone on fleabay sometimes lists 1/2in or similar Metabo chucks, have seen this maybe 8 times in the last year. Know nothing about the chuck, its accuracy and performance, or who its made by, but I'm thinking that if it is as good as the Metabo tools, it should be good.

The chinese ones I've used over time (luckily never bought one) often look the part but have very poor gripping capabilty. Of course, one slip and the drill stem is burred, and accuracy goes out the door until the bit does.

This link is a 3/8 unit but I'm sure I have seen 1/2in listed.

    Hi Guys,

Just stole a nice new 0 to 1/2" Jacobs chuck with No.2 Morse taper, from that well known auction site. At $36, it was a bargain, I reckon.

Thanks to you all for the info, just have to wait for the postie.

    Ken
