I have purchased 1/4" and 5/16" at Blackwoods, local Bendigo supplier (Abbotts Supply) also stock it.

Any bearing/engineering shop should have it, that's where i get mine from.

Could you use 'needles' (rollers) for needle roller bearings? You can get them in all sorts of lenths and diameters from bearing shops. I would have thought they'd be ideal for writ pins (gudgeon pins).
The other option might be the shanks of HSS drills.

I've bought oil hardening from Bohlers in Brisbane, in 600mm lengths possibly. Their minimum cash sale was I think $60 so you may need to pad your order with other materials.

Thanks Gents, lots of options I hadn't considered. I've also found this eBay seller in England who sells 333mm sticks of English made silver steel in a range of diameters at reasonable prices with reasonable postage:

Not sure what the reference to "welding" in the title means tho.

Model Engineering Supplies in Tullamarine sell silver steel in 18" lengths, only imperial sizes so you would have to turn it down to size if you want 2.5mm dia.

Or you could get a couple of dowell pins from a tool makers supplies like Hales in Braeside.

minitech in brisbane is excellent for pricing, and very good to deal with for postal orders - they have a website as well.
I've also bought silver steel from McJing - they were slightly cheaper than minitech on certain sizes, but that was only because i was buying 1m lengths - typically minitech sell in 300mm lengths, but will cut whatever you want if you ask.

When I was last there a year or so ago, Mick Moyle's Engineers Supplies in Summer Hill, NSW had lots of small sizes of silver steel, about 12" long, but I can't remember if they were metric or imperial or both.

Hunted around for a while, and finally H&F were good enough to refer me to Hi-Speed Tooling in Welshpool WA. Their online catalogue lists round HSS bits from 1/8" to 1/2" and from 4mm to 12mm. Prices seemed fair and they posted my order off promptly. Can't ask more than that. Combustor.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I ordered a few 300mm sticks from Minitech last night. They have a large range of imperial and metric sizes at good prices. Also ordered a 100 x 1 x 25.4 slitting saw blade. I've been looking everywhere for one of those.
