Default Drilling Steel - Angle of Cutting Face

    Hi,

I promise this will be the last question on drilling steel. I have a very large number of 10 mm diameter holes to drill in steel. Would you please advise the optimal angle of the cutting face of the drill bit?

    Thanks and regards
    Glenn

    G'day Glenn,

We were taught in trade school to sharpen to an included angle of 118 degrees for steel, 120 is close enough.

    Have fun!

    Wot Tankstand sed .

You can make a gauge from two hex nuts ,place two flats together and the angle between the upper and lower faces will be 120deg.

Hope I explained that clearly .

many years ago.........................Nah! You don't want to hear that one

    At Apprenticeship School,
one of the items we made was a Brass Drill gauge.
Hole sizes from 1/8" up to 1/2" inclusive, all evenly spaced; in neat Parallel lines.

On the side was a cut-out for sharpening Drills.

    YES!
    Mine was 120*
    Still got it

As woodlee said or if you have one hex nut place the drill over the nut any two faces of a hex nut are at 120 deg, but its more important to have both flutes the same lendth , have the rake right and don't overheat the drill when sharpening than getting the angle at exactly 118 or 120deg

I just scanned these pages from the engineers black book for your information.

This book is a wealth of information ,
well worth the money that my employer paid for it.
Good onya boss. much handier than an ar*se pocket in a singlet.

The gauge fits in the back cover .

I agree. I have the older version of engineers little helper, and it is looking fairly worn out with the use it gets. Invaluable little book IMO.
