Drive belt Vintage Lath
Have just broken the leather drive belt on my Coltech 6 inch Lath.
Looking for either leather or synthetic replacement with pin type joiner.
Belt is 66 inch long and 1.5 inch wide.
Have found a couple of companies in UK who can help .
Anyone know of any company in OZ that could supply?.

If you don't mind a little dismantling to fit you can use a PK8 (8 rib poly serpentine belt) that's the equivalent of 66" long.
Should cost around $60.00 and will last forever and have no joins in it.

Thanks Zuffen, will check how easy it is to strip down! best offer to date for open belt is $129 inc post and packing, for synthetic "Super Tensile" belt with alligator joiner. (ex UK)
Was hoping there might be an Oz supplier.

Why use a pin joiner? get some leather the correct width, but with an overlap in length of about 60 -75 mm. taper each end for the length of the overlap so that when the two ends are overlaped the belt doesn't get any thicker. Couple of bits of flat material either wood or metal that are larger than the join as backing plates, then glue the joint with a good flexable adhesive (i've used aquadhere and also araldite on different belts) glamp togther using a glamp and the backing plates. leave to cure over night and next day you are away. Obviously you will have fitted the new belt in place before you glued the join. I used this method on an old metal lathe with a 2" wide belt. I used araldite (because that was all I had at the time) I didn't think it would last very long but it was still ok 10 years later when I sold the machine. Must admit it wasn't an everyday user though. Still a few hours every week or so.
I just wish the V belt lathe that I have now was as easy. Bought a new B section belt for it yesterday. will have to dismantle the head to fit. I tried one of the "Redthane" round belts but its not much good on the lateh. Too much stretch in the belt.
hope this helps

Whoops, forgot to say the longer the taper on the join the better it will be. more flexible and more surface area for the glue

Bollie, have you tried the segmented V-belts? They allow you to join the belt in place, and I think they still drive OK.

Bill, yes I did, only until I discovered the price though. Fenner powerlink $50/metre. min 2 metres. Thats my work price from Blackwoods, over the counter would be higher. I bought a std B30 V belt over the counter from Blackwoods for less than $10. At that price I'll spend a few hours stripping the headstock. It will also give me the chance to clean all the crud out from under the shafts etc where I can't reach normally. Might replace the seals while I'm at it.
