It was kind of an impromptu thing Phil...Stuart dropped in to return the nylon sling that I loaned him yesterday, and Peter came by to collect two of the rocks. My gantry crane is a handy device for these, except for two things: I mounted the inexpensive chinese 600 kg hoist off centre on the gantry to allow the chain fall pride of place. (I never use the chainfall, and don't have it mounted)

Second, these little power hoists actually aren't bad, but they are way too fast, even doubled up.

Tomorrow a courier company is coming to get another one, so I will be tied here until then. (They couldn't narrow it down to less than daylight sometime)

Time spent with like-minded folks always passes too quickly, Stuart. And Ray, don't despair, my precision tombstone showroom has plenty of stock left. I was just today noting all the original Enco/MSC shipping labels on these stones: looks like we cleaned out the northeast US of grade A rock in one go.

My smaller Czech stone is going to Anorak Bob as soon as get back from the ceremonial rogering that I am about to endure at work. (the end of 20 weeks training, wherein we recieve the secret handshake and the lore and legends of the elders. Plus the notes on all the good third world tool shop/cocktail lounges.)

Peter H should be home about now, four hours after last drinks (coffee, for the record, Your Worship).

Looking forward to the next gab fest...maybe might even have one of my machines finished for that occassion! And at least some of the monorail installed.

I saw that one, thought he'd be pushing it to get his price even if the machine was in pristine condition. As it is, it's basically worth scrap value.

The level of ignorance over the care of precision machines always bemuses me. I saw a Cincy horizontal mill treated the same way not far from me and it eventually went for scrap. The previous owner wasn't impressed but what can you do?

Geez, thats pretty sad. Why wouldn't he at least chuck a $10 bratice tarp over it and a bit of oil or grease on the bare metal before leaving it outside.

That's submarine rust. Not good enough for the basic protections, but good enough to ask $1800?

It would be a bad deal if it was free.

It never ceases to amaze me how unrealistic people are about the value of what they own, especially when it comes time to sell things. Flight rust or not, "Tell him he's dreaming"

They sold for around $8K brand new, IIRC, without DRO. 8 speed spindle. The slightly bigger one (Studturn I think) was a better choice - 16 speeds and a slightly longer bed. Basically a pretty nice copy of a Colchester.

That thing might fit in the back of a ute, but I wouldn't want to be driving it.

One of my favourite Scuba Diving places is in Vanuatu called the Wreck of the "President Coolidge" An American luxury liner converted to a troup carrier sunk by mines, after entering the bay in the wrong diection,& sunk by its own USA mines.Sank in an hour or so with all equipment on board, & 5,500 soldiers getting off, in a hurray.
Sunk in Oct 1942, & lying with its bow in 60ft & its stern at 240 ft.
Its got lathes & machines of this era, still on it, as well as all the rifles & personal gear of the men that were on board.
My first thought was this mill could have come off something like that.
The mill looks like its been submerged in salt water for a long time. A bit more than just flight rust.
    regards
    Bruce
