eBay purchase- milling cutter
Gents,
I'm keen to hear your opinions on this recent eBay purchase. Here's the listing:
1 1 2" Cohss Endmill END MILL 6 Flutes Cutter 1" Threaded SK Qualcut | eBay
I've attached a couple of photos of the cutter I received. The most obvious point is that the photo in the eBay listing isn't of the item I received. Of more concern to me is the state of the cutting edges. I don't mind the "flight" rust, but those edges don't seem to be in "like new condition" as the description in the listing states. Have I been dudded, or is it a simple matter to hone the edges of these cutters?

Definitely not "like new". Done considerable work.
Has rounded corners and worn faces. Bottom flute in second photo has a chipped corner.
Seems expensive for what it is.
Needs a resharpen, which basically defeats the whole exercise.

Hi Chris,
Are you worried about the shape of the edge?
Thats a function of the shape of the flute.
There is one of mine(also missing a corner)
Certainly not "like new"
Regrinding the end is not a huge deal(with the right jigs which I doubt you have, neither do I)
The flutes I can see look ok.
Not sure what I would do with that. Anyone know what a new one would cost?
Stuart
p.s. I have dealt c-tool a few times in the past. He sent me the wrong blade once and was happy to fix it up, though we made a deal on free postage for something else I wanted.Last edited by Stustoys; 27th July 2013 at 02:16 PM. Reason: p.s.

Looks like the seller is using the same photo for different items:
1 3 8" Cohss Endmill END MILL 6 Flutes Cutter 1" Threaded SK Qualcut | eBay
1 1 8" Cohss Endmill END MILL 6 Flutes Cutter 1" Threaded SK Qualcut | eBay
and yours:
1 1 2" Cohss Endmill END MILL 6 Flutes Cutter 1" Threaded SK Qualcut | eBay
I would complain.

Thanks gents. This bloke has 99.7% positive feedback, but looking at the negative feedback comments it appears a few people have received worn/corroded tools when they were expecting new or as-new. Mine obviously isn't the first tool he has used a different photo for. I'll send him a complaint and see what he comes back with.
Chris
edit: complaint sent.

I have purchased of this bloke in the past, he generally puts the best photo of multiple units up and seem to get rid of the poorer ones first, I purchased an mt3 dead centre of him a while ago which the tip had been ground off, after a few threats of negative feedback and threatening a paypal claim he sent me another one. I also purchased a 1/2" Tap from him that was in as new condition, so he looks a little hit and miss.

An arm and a leg for a new Clarkson or Presto. I don't know if Qualcut is still around. Here is a cheap alternative from the UK. No idea of where it's made - Endmill 1 1/2" HSS END MILL NEW | eBay

I bought a 1/2"x20UNF tap from c-tool as well. Admittedly it was cheap but was advertised as excellent.
The part I got was a rusted heap of crap - not the one pictured, not only that is the markings were basically non-existent which lead to the fact it was actually an M12 1.25 metric tap.
So yeah, the pictured item was not the one I received. I wrote a stern response stating that the tap was wrong, and that is was in a poor state anyway and to make sure my replacement was in excellent condition. They sent me a replacement which is correct and in far better condition (and a Sutton brand), but the cheap skate wanted me to carefully slit the side of the envelope, switch the taps, and then put "Return to Sender" on it so he didn't have to pay $1.50 postage for return.
Won't be buying from c-tool again. Buying used tools can be a crap shoot, but if i can see a picture of the item I'll make my judgement. What i don't appreciate is a picture of a used tool, and then I'm sent a different used tool which is not what I made the purchase on. Not a fan of his practices. Avoid C-Tool.
I'd complain about that cutter in the OP and demand a refund.Last edited by Hornetb; 28th July 2013 at 12:14 AM. Reason: Spelling

Thanks for the extra feedback. This seller offers a full refund IF the seller pays for the return postage. The cutter weighs 600g, so I'm out of pocket $12.50 if I return it. It might be cheaper to have it sharpened? I'll make some calls on Monday to see if I can find a company in Melbourne that can sharpen it.

Re the cost of a new one- I was quoted over $300 for an 8 flute 40mm Presto end mill. This was from a vendor O/S who always does me good pricing on Dormer & Presto.

Hi Chris,
Dissapointing experience, I'd jump and down and get either a replacement or your money back, after that's settled, just never deal with the guy again, I'd guess he's buying up cheap lots of used tooling at auction and then flogging it off for many times what he's paid for it.
If the item doesn't match the pictures, it's an open and shut case.
Based on your experience and others in this thread, I for one would steer clear of this guy.
Regards
Ray

Not good
I have seen that sellers stuff on ebay often. I have steered clear of his tooling because it looks rather dubious and " well used " . I think he goes around to garage sales and buys the stuff for next to nothing, he then flogs it on ebay . Mike

The problem I have found with ebay disputes is that you are not covered for the postage.
So you have to send the item back to the seller to receive a refund of the purchase price only.
Then you are out two lots of postage.
Seems to be nothing stopping people sending goods that are nothing like the pictures and you end up stuck with it.

If buyers gave a true indication on his feedback you probably would not have brought from him in the first place. All too often good feedback is left when it is not deserved. I have been guilty of this myself because I found it difficult to bag a seller so I would leave no feedback if not entirely happy.
A recent experience with China changed my mind. I tried to buy the same item from five different sellers and each time it was not delivered. On the first I was asked to wait longer until a Paypal claim was not possible. They got my money. I learnt from that and got refunds from the next four eventually.
I think I worked out what was happening as all the sellers were linked through the same service centre to the same wharehouse - they were probably just ebay shopfronts. The wharehouse obviously did not have stock but there was no feedback to the sellers or they simply chose to ignore it - after all they had my money.
I decided to start leaving negative feedback through this as I do not want others to get caught like I did.
While this is not the same experience as the endmill the feedback system if used properly should sort the crap from the clay and change their ways or disappear.Cheers,
Rod
