    Hi Mike,

Congratulations on making it through chapter 1, I can't imagine what life is like on dial-up.

Yes it's to reduce eddy currents, much like a transformer laminations. I think "Eddy Currents" would make a good forum name..

I posted this already in another thread, but for completeness, I'll post it here as well.

    http://www.etech.net.au/InductionMotorTheory.pdf

There's a bit of maths in it, but not real heavy stuff... There's a good equivalent circuit for AC induction motors, and nice detailed analysis.

    Regards
    Ray

    Hi RayG,
Here is one I built at work, ill let you have it for $40K ... Just kidding.
Its the unit I built for when we are doing Motor Starting Training, shows the different starting methods and on the HMI can show the differances in current, torque and temperature from the different starting methods being DOL, Star/Delta, Auto Transformer, Liquid Resistance, Soft Start and VSD.
The picture was taken when I was near the end of building it.

    Regards,
    Keith.

It's original use was in a transmission, again by Rockwell.

Default re laminations...we had them in my day, Plato,

They don't mention why the stator and rotor are made from thin laminations . Is it eddy currents ? Eddy Currents induced into a large single lump would degrade the performance ?

    MIKE
Yes that is correct. The idea of laminations is to provide high surface contact impedance to current flow. That current would otherwise create useless heating and thus waste of energy. They are thin so that their intrinsic impedance is also high.

    Hi Keith,

It's a bit hard to see, but does yours stop ellipsoidal depleneration in Milford Trunions like the Rockwell one?

I'm going to listen to that a few times and write down some of the better "technical terms"
I'll feed it to the engineers next time they ask me what I found to repair a fault.
They will not want to admit that they don't have the faintest idea of what i'm talking about and will nod agreeably and tell me well done.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

LOL With all the talk about laminations, reminds me you can floor most of them by mentioning Hysteresis losses.

I can remember, standing around with a group of guys discussing some obscure technical problem, when one of them said, "maybe it's an issue with the LRT..?"

No one asked, eventually someone asked "what's an LRT", to which the guy replied pointing at a red led, "little red thing"...

A factory manager I know of thought he could make transformers much cheaper by using 1mm lamination steel in place of 0.5mm.
