Elliot 8-18 Surface Grinder
Hi all. Some of you may be aware that I recently purchased (yet to be aquired) an Elliot SG.
By chance does anyone have a copy of an owners manual for one of these or one of the same family?
Happy to pay for it. There are people selling these manuals which I may have to buy but thought id ask here first.
Cheers.

Can you post a picture of it Simon? mine is a 20 x8 and I have a book!
I've also had it in pieces so know a bit about it!If you do pull it apart there are two little
one way oil metering valves connected to the table motion ram if these are put back in
the wrong way round you will get no oil on the ways, also you have to fill all the table reservoirs
first as these only supply a small amount of oil to keep the reservoirs full. I found all this out
because some idiot in the TAFE system had reassembled mine the wrong way around! Mine has
as new ways- you can still see all the scraping marks on it.

thanks. I'll attach a pic on Saturday night when I get home. Apex machinery have an 8/18 manual for $33 so I have an option. My biggest priority is to find out the correct lifting method for it before I leave and to ascertain if it's on a ball bearing slide so I know what needs to be done. Oh also the weight so that I know what size trailer to take.
cheers

Here it is. Hope this attachment works. Your very lucky having "as new" ways. That's awesome me. I have no idea what these will be like. I've taken a bit of a punt. Ways and spindle bearings in that order are my biggest concern. Fortune sometimes favours the brave so I shall see!

Don't buy a manual Simon it comes with one. The machine weights a tonne. You might get lucky loading it the scrappy is bringing a 4 tonne forklift next week.BETTER TO HAVE TOOLS YOU DON'T NEED THAN TO NEED TOOLS YOU DON'T HAVE

The manual says you need a 8 inch thick foundation

Simon, is this beast metric or imperial (or do we regard it as a Schodinger grinder with an indeterminate state at the moment)

Hi guys.
andre: you are a champion. Thanks for the pics and the lifting info. You saved me an hours drive to apex machinery and $33 for a manual. I think I owe you diner Wednesday night if your free!
8 inches of slab? Once again I'm 4 inches short
hi Michael, we'll being old pommy I just assumed it would be imperial but who knows? But I guess until I get there and look, it will be like Schrödinger's cat!

Been looking closer at andres pics. Why are there 2 separate liquid vessels, one each side? Assume Lhs is the coolant pump and tank but what's the one on the rhs? Looks like the hydraulic system but I thought that was internal inside front cabinet. The oil stains on the floor have me nervous but I have read that being pommy they tend to leak like a sieve!
all will be revealed.

Looks good Simon, I think you got a bargain, you might have to set up multiple VFD's for spindle, coolant etc. etc..

Thanks guys.
hi Ray, thanks for the positive comments. I'll reserve my views until I get it home and do some tests with a dial indicator. I could be lucky or it could be totally clapped out with uselessly worn ways. It's the risk I took. Looking at the info that Andre attached, it does now appear to be much bigger than I originally thought! The 10x1x3 wheel has me a bit concerned regarding availability.
All 3 motors, coolant, spindle and hydraulics are about 1kw or so, so was wondering if they can be run from single VFD. Getting 3 phase to the shed when I pull my finger out so it's no longer a concern really.
techo, I thought that was a hydraulic power pack. Puzzling cause they supposed to be housed inside. I had read that Elliot stopped making parts for the pump a while back so maybe it's retro fitted after the original wore out?
cheers.

Hi Simon,

You could probably run the coolant and hydraulics off the one VFD, I do that, and the coolant motor is run via a 240 to 415 3 phase transformer.
Take it easy on the drive back... you don't want one tonne of surface grinder coming throught the back window...
