I know some bigger lathes have powered compounds but I was never able to find pics or descriptions of how they work. The scheme I came up with was pretty much what Ewan described. Can't see how else you'd do it mechanically. But it's so easy to slap an electric feed on, like RC did. I'd even rather build a taper attachment than try to retrofit all those bevel gears. The reason I asked was I'd still like to see a factory implementation if I ever come across one.

Sorry for diverting the thread. Nice looking machine. Bruce, can you remind us what the nominal envelope is please? It looks substantial but hard to tell from photos.

I am in the same boat Brian, I would like see the set up just for seeing sake.
Bigger lathes have much more room than ours, though the ones Pipeclay said about are not huge on Machines4u.

    HI,
A Lathe chuck doing 4000 RPM , I think I will hide under the table. The Lathe looks Good, out of interest what did You use as a solvent?. I think I remember you Posting about your Accident, it looks like Your Thumb is healing up well. I hope You regain full movement when the Wires come out.

    Hi Bruce,

Nice lathe, sorry to hear about your thumb. You sure wouldn't want to drag it along the carpet!

    Cheers,

    Simon

My Lathe is a metric unit that is marked as 380 so lookin in the manual it sort of translates to
15" swing over bed, 9.5" ish over the cross slide and 36" between centres, spindle bore is 2". Motor is either 7 or 10 Hp, I havent actually tried to look on the motor itself.
I didn't use any special solvent to clean the bed as there is no rust I was only ensureing it was totally clean of any grunge, basically wiped it down with turps until the paper cloth was showing nothing on it.
I do need to ring around the industrail felt suppliers in Melbourne as I need to make up some new Way wipers.

    Cheers Bruce

That's a lovely set of numbers. For proper wipers, talk to Phil (Machtool) about these: Standard Way-Wipers I have some and they rock. Bit fiddly to make but do a great job.
