Anyone else have a bolt like this on their mill?
Hi all,
Here's a question I have been meaning to ask since I got my mill but never got round to it.
As with most of these geared head mills, the column is fastened with four bolts, usually cap heads. One of these on my mill has a cap head inside a cap head. Two questions, does anyone else have a similar setup? Do I assume it's some way of fine adjusting the column to base tram to 90 deg?
Here's a pic of what I'm flapping my gums about....
Cheers,
Simon

HI,
I just out to the Shed to have a look at My Toptech DM-45, No it does have anything like that it just has four Bolts. You could well be right, it might be for finely adjusting the Column to the Table. Out of interest what Make and Modelis Your Mill Drill ?. Does it show or Say anything in the Owners Manual about this set up ?.Last edited by steran50; 22nd February 2012 at 09:32 PM. Reason: Owners Manual

Hi there,
No it does not make mention of it in the users manual. It's a ZAY7045L/1
I'm not quite ready but I think I will have to dismantle it to see how it works. I'd be very surprised if it was anything impressive or well made, most likely to made of cardboard and cheese!
Cheers,
Simon

Hello Simon,
Are you sure it is another capscrew, or could it just be the remains from the process of punching the hex into the head of the capscrew?

This is fun. My guess is it's an adjustable foot, so that no shims are required to get a solid mount. With only three fixed feet it would always be solid and stable, but when a fourth is added there's potential for movement.

I think it is just the head of a broken or cut cap screw that has found its way into the recess of the larger screw.
What's the prize?
Mm.

Hi Mm,
I'm hoping for the sake of embarrising myself that you are wrong! I must admitt, I have not even touched it with an allen key! I just so far just assumed it's actually fastened. I'll go home and see if it comes off.
I promise to confess if it is just sitting there and I'm able to pick it out with some tweezers

After an exhaustive and thorough investigation I have discovered what the cap screw is for:
Turns out it's a grub screw that just happened to fall there during the assembly process. I managed to pick it out with some tweezers. Sorry for waisting everyones time. I'll go and hide in the corner now

Wow, a grub screw for free! That makes your mill purchase even better value. I'm jealous.
