I just had a chat with our resident epoxy materials expert and it turns out he has a PhD student making and testing Pb-epoxy and W-epoxy mixtures for experimental x-ray shielding. Of course medical people are prepared to pay premium for this sort of stuff so cost is not that big of an issue (I wish it was). While the vibe absorbance will be excellent the thermal coefficient of expansion for neither of these mixes is not going to be as good as silica (glass or sand) - epoxy mixes so it sounds like it is all a bit of a trade off.

In these other forums, much has been discussed about the improved dampening properties and so fourth but I have also read other members saying that it is a furphy and nothing is really to be gained. Some of the discussions get quite technical and way above my basic knowledge of material science.

I have done the usual search on this fourm and little has been discussed. Has anyone attempted such a project and if so, what were the results? If so, what ratios and ingredients did you use? I'm really interested to know. I don't have any immdeiate intentions to take this on as a project but I'm still interested in what people here have to say.

    Hi Frank,

Yes I have read the article about the mill/drill base being filled and the ratios of resin, granite & sand. I glossed through the rest of the thread though.

Most of these articles seem to be by people who are just fumbling around and "having a go" and with very little science to back up their idea. I'm not against that and much great stuff has been done with this approach but I just want to learn the science about it.

    Cheers,

    Simon

    Thanks,

    Simon
